Your gallery has a firm ceiling. You can upload photos directly to a message ad libitum. I suspect the gallery can't be used as a pipeline unless it has sufficient free space.

Camille, I hope you get better rapidly!

Get better soon Camille! Get heaps of rest.

The attachment situation will just be considered as the issue, which I'm just currently experiencing in the form of a message coming up when I try to upload an attachment for regular thread postings - for uploading images (regular method).

As I only encountered the issue yesterday, and because I can't upload images in the usual 'attachment' way ----- my current work-around is to upload image files (just a few) to the member's gallery area --- my member gallery. It's temporary only. And I knew that the member's gallery has a quota limit.

Once the issue is understood and maybe addressed and resolved/fixed/sorted, then I'll revert back to the usual method of pic-uploads for forum threads ------ the attachment method. Thanks again Camille. Speedy recovery.

Thanks ES. Does that imply that the usual attachments (my current total files in my attachments area) has a limit?

The OrchidBoard software is indicating that the total memory taken for my accumulated attachments amount to approximately 70 MB. If there is a ceiling (such as 70 MB), then does imply that I won't be able to post more images using the regular file-attachments method?

I don't know. I'm unclear - are you unable to attach photos to messages using the standard OB method of clicking Manage Images then uploading them?

Thanks for asking ES. I'm currently unable to upload photos via the 'manage attachments' system. So I currently cannot use the standard OrchidBoard method for uploading pics.

When I attempt to upload a file, I get the response like seen in this link here ....

image link

When I click on the 'upload' button, the system generates that message up the top ----- as in 'exceeds quota by 144.2 kB' ------ and that particular file I was testing with ----- is only about 500 kB.

I looked around more. On this page
Forum Supporter Membership

I found this bullet point as a perquisite to Forum Supporters:
  • No Limit on number of attachments (normally 50MB)

I don't know whether this refers to each attachment or in aggregage.

I went to see what info was available in the admin panel. Total attachment limit is 70MB for standard users. The language isn't super clear but this seems to be in aggregate. For forum supporters there is indeed no limit.

Thanks Camille! The 70 MB aligns with the details seen in the screen-shot.

There are various possible options for sorting out a limit like that. One possible option is to just have the member (if permitted) create a different user OrchidBoard account - eg. SouthPark1

At one stage, back in the past, the number of 50 MB (instead of 70) ------- may well have been the limit. And possibly increased to a new value of 70.

Speaking from consensus of admin/moderators…

When a photo is uploaded as an attachment, it is automatically downsized. Example: a 4.8MB phone picture is roughly 95Kb once uploaded. Attached photos are stored on Marty’s servers. Ones that are externally linked are stored on that link (Flickr, Photobucket, your PC, etc). They do not take up space on the OB servers.
The upload limit was created by the owner, Marty. The last update of any settings was over five years ago, probably longer. Moderator understanding is server storage limitations and possibly an incentive to become a forum supporter.

None of us can remember anyone having this issue in the past. When one considers the number of users the forum has or has attracted in the past and considering we don’t delete old posts as many forums do to save space, it is a significant amount of data held on the servers. Allowing a higher quota would over time add a significantly increased amount of data.

I also note, SouthPark, that you very often post numerous pictures three different ways. A recent thread that comes to mind is your Rlc. Memoria Helen Brown ‘Sweet Afton.” Posting numerous pictures three different ways readily uses up your storage limitations and is really unnecessary.

Moderators have guidelines regarding the reason for creating a new account. It is very much discouraged, for numerous reasons and allowed only in certain circumstances upon consensus of the moderators/admin. Doing it to circumvent the Board’s settings is of course not a good reason. You basically have three options:
  • Pay to be a forum supporter
  • Post links only to externally stored photos
  • Manually go through your posts and delete excess and/or duplicate attachments from oldest or least informative threads. You would be the one to edit and do this, as there’s no quick fix on the admin side to do so. This would lower your 70MB aggregate storage issue.

WW ----- that's the only case where I have posted pictures in three different ways.

It is assumed that linking images from google drive doesn't actually use up my own storage quota within OrchidBoard.

So ----- we should only focus on the other two ways ---- not the google drive linking. The google drive link is basically to allow others to view the image with full image quality - as it is known that regular uploads to OrchidBoard results in not just a smaller file, but a highly compressed file - where quality is reduced even if you upload a 'regular' 1024x768 file. That is, if you upload a regular 1024x768 file having a filesize of 500 kB, then OrchidBoard actually does some work on it, and results in a 90 kB file (for example). And the image quality - in some cases is noticeably reduced as a result of that. But that is understandable, as the server has drive storage capacity limits. But ----- linking to a google area (as a secondary source) does allow some users to view 'full quality' images - which is what my google links are for. So even if the google drive links (one day in the future disappear for any reason), then at least we always have the local OrchidBoard pics to fall back on.

Totally understand the 'rules' of OrchidBoard WW. I'm also very careful in the way that I convey my thoughts - hence I wrote 'if permitted' or 'if allowed', which I should add ----- it is fine if 'not allowed'.

I just won't post extra orchid and flower pics if I have run out of quota space (and if creating a second account isn't encouraged or recommended). I'm totally happy with just chatting to nice OrchidBoard members here and to see/enjoy their orchid pics, which is why I joined OrchidBoard in the first place.

I'm not going to delete attachments, because all those attachments are associated with images posted on orchidboard - for the benefit of sharing pics. Deleting attachments is not going to help - because that would result in maybe 'crosses or X symbols' or broken-images (no-image), blank spots all over the place in the forum threads that I created. So deleting attachments is not recommended.

My google drive links are 'externally stored'. However - the usual 'add as picture' option from the google drive links doesn't actually work (unlike photo sharing sites).

But ----- it is well-known that ---- even if the 'add as picture' option works (for external sites) ----- one pitfall or drawback of relying only on external link images is ------- if that external site either goes down temporarily, or goes down permanently), then there is nothing to fall back on.

Your comment about 'really unnecessary' is only because you didn't realise that I was only going to temporarily use my own member gallery area for sharing pics (even though I had mentioned it already in an earlier post in this thread) - the reason that is.

You didn't understand the situation - just as I hadn't yet understood the situation - until Camille did a check on total file attachment constraints ----- the 70 MB limit.

Just to recap (explaining the multiple links method again) - my approach involved showing attachments, as well as external links ------ which allows other members to quickly have access to local images (quickly, but possibly with compromised quality), as well as higher quality images from the external site. And - if the external site goes down ------ as mentioned, we can fall back to local images (even if quality is reduced).
