Default H&R nurseries closing????

Some one mentioned in our society meeting tonight that H&R Nurseries was closing their doors.

Anyone heard anything about this or know if that’s true? Goodness I hope not, they are my favorite vendor by leaps and bounds. Every single thing I have ever ordered from them (at least 25%+ of my collection) has been outstanding, in both flowers quality and vigor. Their orchids are just so damn healthy. I really hope they are not closing, I need more of their walkerianas, and violaceas, and Encyclias, and any of the other bifoliate Catts, and all of the Latouria Dens, and some more Spatulata Dens, and, and, and....

Gee, I hope not.

H&R helped me get into business by offering me wholesale pricing on small orders.

Yes, H&R is closing in a few years. Roy told us during a February visit to Dallas. He plans to still make hybrids and sell to high volume customers (i.e. a certain number of compots, can't remember exact number).

Even the guys at H&R get to enjoy retirement.

1. Oh thank goodness. So then I have time to get whatever my little heart desires, lol. I was worried they were closing in a couple of months!

2. Awesome that Roy isn’t giving up making some hybrids. Their breeding program is spectacular, such high quality orchids all around

3. I hope they have a great retirement! I’m glad to hear that they are not closing due to lack of customers or getting priced out like so many other nurseries. Hopefully someone can pick up where they left off

4. I will still be very sorry to see them go. Example: I just got an order delivered from them. I am taking care of the trophies this year for our orchid show and we are giving out orchids rather than the typical mug or plaque. I had a $15 per plant budget, I needed 45 orchids, I gave H&R a call, and this is what they sent (pics below ) . A couple of near blooming size orchids with the rest being blooming size, in spike or sheath, previously bloomed or in flower now. I am over the moon and also very bummed that I can’t keep them all

That is really awesome. Every time I talked to them either by phone, email, or at a show, they were all such great people

Roy Tokunaga is a great presenter, low-key and informative. No wonder his staff delivers good service. Roy will be appearing at the Sierra Nevada Judging Center Speakers Day in Sacramento, CA on July 27th. This even is a must-do for me, always enjoyable and a great chance to get some interesting plants. It's well worth some effort to get there.
