Default Good dwarfs?

Hi everyone

Just wondering what everyone recommends dwarf orchid wise? I am relatively new to orchids but have quite a bit of experience with plants in general.

And then maybe where are some of the better, cheaper places to get said orchids?

Bletilla striata are small to medium sized plants. They pretty much grow like many household variety plants. These are true terrestrial orchids and do well for the novice orchid grower with some experience in gardening in general. This one is winter dormant and is in active growth for the rest of the year.

Encyclia alata are fairly small. Super easy.

Encyclia tampensis are small to medium sized plants.

Anachielium cochleatum are small to medium plants and are ridiculously easy to grow.

All species within the genus Leptotes are super easy, with many species being true miniatures and Leptotes bicolor being a small to medium sized plant.

Those in the genus Barkeria are very easy to grow and are fairly smallish plants, but they do have a true dormancy period that you must observe.

Galeandra species tend to smallish and showy, they are Catasetinae, so that means they have a true dormancy you must observe.

These are but a few miniature to small orchids that are fairly easy to grow and are pretty showy.

If you want to get into the more obscure types, just say it, and maybe I can think of a few that would be good to grow as a beginning orchid grower.

Stenoglottis species are also easy to grow South African terrestrial orchids. They are generally winter dormant.

A lot of us are growing Sophronitus cernua right now: have a look in the 'projects' section.

Andy's Orchids - Orchid Species - Orchids - Species Specialist - Orchids on a stick has a great selection of miniature species and makes it easy to select based on your growing conditions.

I also recommend the Haraella. Smells like lemon furniture polish...very nice. Angracum didieri, Angraecum distictum, dendrobium oligophyllum, oncidium twinkle, oncidium cheiroporum, Sedirea japonica, Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Bluebird', Vanda falcata (formerly, neofinetia) are other minis I have and like, as well as the project plant (it isn't fragrant, only blooms once per year, but it has an impressive will to survive). I prefer fragrant orchids and my collection tends to reflect this, with the occasional exception. Many of these bloom more than once a year, another quality I like. Good luck!
