Hi,,,,,this is my first attempt at posting a message. I have acquired a Sarcoglottis sceptrodes at an orchid show in Venice Fl. i have repotted it in all sphagnum in an orchid pot. Should I put it in another medium? Also, how old does it have to be to blossom & what do the blossoms look like? This one has me TOO CURIOUS. Flanana

Hi flanana

I picked this one up at the Tampa show recently! It's in bud right now and I'm waiting patiently for the blooms to appear.

I usually don't use sphag moss for anything other than mounts and my Phal species but I did repot this one into sphag in a deep plastic basket.

Here's some info and a picture:

and here's a pic of mine:

Welcome.

Great orchid, one of my favorites.

These guys like to stay moist. Slight drying out is good, but never bone dry.

Sphagnum works well, just gotta be careful. Dont overpot, and dont pack the moss in too tight. This leads to moss that stays too wet, wont allow for air circulation, and eventual rotting. Terrestrial mix (peat, bark, perlite, charcoal -type) also works well.

Plants a couple years old are ready to bloom. They dont require much light, never direct sun. The leaves will fade out fast if its too bright.

Inflorescence shoots straight out the center of the plant, with small greenish-brown blooms up top. Kinda remind me of a Praying Mantis type insect.

Google images has a few pics also.
