Orchis canariensis

I wasn't really expecting finding them still in flower, but I found hundreds today - never had seen so many in past years. The weather has been in favour of a good flowering. More tomorrow; made lots of photographs!

Well, then here we go! This next one is a 'hungry flower', a plant growing in the crevices of a mountain road wall. Extremely exposed, a very windy situation, very wet if there are clouds but equally drying up when clouds disappear. Only a few flowers on every spike. Water, winds and temperatures have been benevolent the last three weeks, so the flowers are nearly flawless, but not the leaves!

I seems strange to see them growing next to what appear to be succulents. I like the striping on the lip of the second one you posted. It's always a pleasure to see orchids growing in their natural environment. Very nice!

Orchis canariensis among Greenovia aurea et al. Orchis/Geophytes are succulent plants.



While some grow just along the main road, others are out of reach on the top of slippery sipping cliffs.

If you are aware of some of the South African terrestrial orchids and where they naturally come from, this can be a common sight. Some of the South African Disa spp. grow in similar environments as this Orchis canariensis does.

Just a side note.

Beautiful orchids in-situ. Lovely.

Stunning. I really like that little yellow flowered plant in photo1 hiding to the right.

This little one is a moss, Bryum sp. with nearly ripe (yellow at that point) capsules. The talli are just about 1 cm in hight.
