Default Disa uniflora bud

Bud is growing on Disa uniflora. It'll probably be in full bloom by mid-April. Only one bud for this individual so far. In case it is difficult to discern, it is the part that has an upwards turned tip with a red point.

Plant was purchased as what was considered a "near-blooming sized" plant, without a spike or any buds on it, some time around late Nov, 2014 or early Dec, 2014.

That's cool, Philip. It looks like a pretty small plant to be flowering, doesn't it?

This is actually typically how big this type of Disa uniflora gets vegetatively when it blooms. I haven't really seen one much larger than this, yet...

The last one I had was about the same size when it bloomed.

This plant is in a 3" pot, so this plant is actually about 5" - 5.5" in diameter.

The spike on this plant may grow to be anywhere around 6" - 10" tall by the end of it.

I haven't really seen the ones with a 3' tall inflorescence yet. Maybe it'll pop up in the trade somehow.

The bud is currently about 1" long. This flower is pretty large for a plant that would otherwise be considered "small". Each flower is roughly around 3" across.

Btw, it is difficult for me to gauge just how many leaves the rosette is supposed to really contain. When I had received the plant, there had already been some root damage done.

There was also a period of time, when I was so busy, I neglected to water it in a timely manner, so some of the leaves died off.

This is by far the easiest of all the stream side Disas to bloom.

Philip, I was thinking about the number of leaves. The last year, two D. uniflora did suicidal flowering. One was in a good shape, but no tuber. The other was too small. This winter, some of mine are doing a bit better (with lot more "pups"). But if they flower, it's probably going to be suicidal.
I hope yours will do well!!!

Very nice plants for dirt cheap, very easy to commnicate, and helpful. You do need to contact (their web page isn't updated). I'm not sure how you can grow it in Miami, but you do some amazing things with cooler growers.

Once they bloom, that's pretty much it for the plant. It will either produce offshoots or leave nothing behind. I have reason to believe this plant might produce some offshoots before it goes. There's some swelling around the crown area as if something will be emerging from there.
