Oh my...strange,beautiful flower. Looks very sinister with its 2 long horns piercing the air. And the spike goes on forever. Impressive!

Far taller than any of mine, but does it need the stake or is it just a precaution? I really don't like having to stake my plants.

Normally I don't need to stalk them, but for this one, I had too... the "head" is too heavy for this long long stem...

I skewered a tuber once when trying to stake a plant for transporting, never again! Now they just take their chances if I am showing them.

Forgive me for butting in, but I have a photo handy of a dormant Pterostylis which will answer your question. For me the plants go dormant in May or June and most of them are colony formers. This one has made three replacement tubers, each like a small pearl.
