Vanilla bean orchid

OK so I got my self a Vanilla bean orchid about 2 ft tall and in a 6 inch pot, now what the heck do I do with? I have it in a south window where there is lots of bright light but no direct sun on it, how do you grow yours and what care do I need to give it to keep it happy

I put mine in a hanging basket. High above my kitchen counter next to a partially shaded south facing window.
I personally find that my vanilla orchid is the only orchid I have that thrives with hardcore misting all over its leaves.
I hang mine as high up as possible, and when the vine reaches the ground I loop it back up to the pot and throw about a foot over the other side.
So far it's a lovely house plant, hangs down to about a foot above my kitchen counter. No blooms but I didn't really expect them anyhow.
I water mine pretty much daily.
It seems to love water

I would love to hang mine but I don't have room for any more hanging plants, so its going to sit on a stand and let it grow up the side of a south facing window. thanks for letting me know they like to be misted a lot

I'm fairly certain that will work out just fine lol.
It's a very vigorous grower.

Remember it's grows UP, not down

It's an hemiepiphyte, and will grow way better treated as terrestrial. It can stand full sun under your latitude (it's half light in the tropics, but grows up until it reach the canopea and flower So a 45° north sun won't do much harm save if it has not enough water and air humidity.

Best it to cultivate it in a standard pot with a water reserved included, the vanilla will thrive. And you can keep it wet, as long as it's hot. It'll be in danger under 16°C, won't grow under 20°C. And the roots don't like wetness and cold (under 16°C, it'l kill them).

In short, keep it hot, wet and with lots of light, and it'll grow. If it grows about 30cm/month, it'll be fine, less something is wrong (without help, it'll slow to a stop in winter). Mine has grown about a meter a month in the last year…

I accidentally broke off the growing end of my Vanilla plant.

Will it branch off at one of the leaf nodes or did I kill it?

It should still be able to grow.

It'll branch. You've got to be really hard and nasty (or left it to dry, or too wet in a cold environment) to kill a vanilla.

My vanilla was eaten down by something this spring (doesn't it cause irritation????) and then we had a very cool summer...the thing is starting to grow again. I had even bought a varigated one as I thought it a goner. I moved mine to a hanging basket and have the new one that way. If it is like the passiflora and stephanotis, it will find something to climb, just fine. It is going to get quite large.
