wow, yours has really long leaves. most of the plants I've seen have short leaves.
mine is growing in potting soil in full sun (the tips of the leaves on the older growths burned when I put it out there, but the new growths don't seem to mind.) I need to repot it, since it seems to be growing in all 4 directions, and has reached the edge of the pot in 3 places.

Very cool plant and flower spike. I've only seen one of these firsthand before, and it reminded me more of a cactus or succulent than an orchid.

Yes it does look to be a succulent and is often deemed the succulent orchid. In fact, I grow this orchid in a cactus and succulent medium, and water it as if it was one.
I grow it indoors in moderate light. Though, it spiked in low light.

lambelkip, the new growths in your photo, seem to be about the same size as mine when I spotted the stem poking out. Cross your fingers.

Update: The current height is 7 feet and 3 inches. Blooms are opening everyday. There is currently 15 in bloom with one that is an odd double flower. I will post pictures once it has opened all blooms.
The neighboring spike is now growing faster than ever.
