Sobralia mirabilis 'Angelica' blooming in June
I purchased this in a one gallon last July at the Santa Barbara annual orchid fair. A very interesting orchid, like a short growing bamboo but that has short lived cattleya like blooms in the summer. Well over the past year it has grown into a 3 gallon container and just the past few days has started blooming. The few blooms I had last year lasted for about 5-7 days, hopefully that will hold true this year.

I have read that these orchids love sun, similar to cymbidiums, although I suppose that depends on the location. I have them on the west side of the house, they get sun from perhaps 1 pm until 4:30, but generally bright light when not in full sun. But I am near the coast, lots of marine layer and cooler temperatures, I would think inland or in hotter climate areas morning sun would be more than enough and afternoon sun might burn.

Quite beautiful blooms on this one. And the plant, in spite of its size, looks like it's fairly tidy and would be attractive even without its flowers. Do the blooms have any fragrance?

Yes, a very neat grower ...
You are right, it has a nice mini bamboo kind of growth pattern, about 2 feet tall. I imagine it would make a nice low hedge. Beautiful flowers but no noticeable fragrance.
