xDossinyera 'Tapestry' still around?

This hybrid was produced by Hoosier Orchids and at some point must have released some. I never saw them for sale, or has seen anyone with them. I believe some were part of the stock being sold off when the greenhouse closed, but I never heard who got the stock that included the 'Tapestry' stock.

Are any of these plants still around? Does anyone work with these? The only mentions I ever see are from its registration and some mentions of it in 2004. I'd hate to think this gorgeous hybrid is gone

Ahhhh I never remember which is his website, thank you! I think it is in my bookmarks, but I don't think much about it because there rarely seems to be many jewels available. Maybe they just aren't making it onto the page!

Sorry about how it's typed, I was taught to write intergenerics with a "x" in the front to signify they were such rather than a naturally occurring genus, and the single quotes for the variety name. Is this normally dropped with orchids? How do you tell what is an intergeneric and what is a true genus?

The "x" is generally not used horticulturally with orchids to denote intergenerics. The single quotes are used to denote a particular cultivar or clone. In this name, "Tapestry" is the grex or cross name. Every hybrid with the same two parents carry this grex name.

Usually the "x" is used for natural hybrids, not for artificially produced hybrids - at least that's the case in the orchid world.

Ahhhhhhhh I didn't know Tapestry was a grex! I thought it was a selected clone. This is a registered plant though, doesn't that have to be a specific plant with certain characteristics? My understanding is that this is one of the only plants they allowed registered that hadn't bloomed. I know with Bromeliads you have grex names then selected clones within a grex... funny how different groups do different things. Why does this have to be so confusing *sigh*

I guess here is another question... if I did the same primary cross, would the results be considered the same grex, or would they be a different grex? Or because I could be using different clones of the parent species they'd be different? This seems to be a fuzzy shade of gray going by how loose or specific the definition of "grex" is held to. Doing the cross again has crossed my mind since the ONE photo I've seen was gorgeous and I can't seem to find any around, and I have both parents.

It would be the same grex if you did it, even if it was with different parents or if you made the cross the other way around with the other species as the pod parent.

Any grex with the same parents (species or hybrid) will carry the same name. The specific clones used are of no consequence. Normally, registration of a hybrid requires that at least one plant has bloomed, and that flower is described on the registration application form.
