vanilla roscheri
I just got a free cutting, very small, and I am assured that if it establishes, it will grow just fine in a home environment as long as it gets very high light (but warned not to let it near glass for it will etch it). It is currently planted in the planifolia's pot right now. I don't have room for more plants, really, but everyone had them that wanted them so the extras were going to be tossed. It is small enough that it might not survive, I was told, and it may take a long time to get established so I'm not going to worry about the space problem yet. I tried to pass it up but I hated the thought of it being tossed. Oh, and I'll try not to think about the other two two very healthy, large, vanilla ropes (pompona and an unidentified one) that are hanging off the shelf and what to do about them. At least those two grow well in low light. Does anyone else have a plant-rescuing problem? I did promise myself I was only going to buy miniatures. Sigh

Is there any way I can get a piece of the vanilla roscheri? I collect vanillas. I would be willing to trade or pay.

Mine has a very low chance of survival because it is too small, rootless, and has no growth bud but I will find out the name of the university at the next meeting so you can contact them. That would be your best bet. There might have been other types as well but I didn't look them over until the end, when most people had taken what they wanted. They will undoubtedly trim them again and might be willing to part with some healthy ropes of cuttings in the future. It isn't like giving away cuttings of roses which can easily grow in our climate. I'll post the name soon, good luck,

Let me know if I can return the favor. I didn't know universities gave away pieces of their vanillas. I'd be happy to share mine if they want some. I have pompona(huge and blooming, see my pics), planifolia, lutescens, trigonacarpa, dilloniana, barbellata, aphylla, madagascarensis, claviculata, chamisons. pompona is the only one to bloom yet. I need humidity in my green house.

Thank you for the offer but I don't want anything in return (too many plants and vanillas get VERY LARGE + I don't think I'm doing anything to deserve it, just asking a bunch of very nice people from which of the many universities the vanilla came). I regret very much I didn't take a large, healthy piece so I could guarantee you some but I believe that this will work out for you. As they have at least three different types, they might be thrilled to trade vanilla cuttings with you. Now we just have to wait until the next meeting.
