These plants are vining terrestrials that need to be trellised. They flourish in warm, humid environments and can grow several feet of length each year. Protect them from temperates below 48 degrees. My vanilla is planted in a moist (not soggy) african violet mix. It receives medium to high sunlight with dappled shading and multiple daily mistings.

Hi!
I hope someone else will offer help because I've only had my vanilla since March and mine was nicely growing in a pot! I don't think I'll be much help but here it goes. Maybe someone will feel a compulsion to reply after this! : )
My growing conditions are such that orchid media dries very slowly when the plants are indoors (I have too many plants and a container pond.). I grow my vanilla orchid in a clay pot with a mix of lava rock, vermiculite, perlite, pine bark, miracle grow orchid mix, and sand but I have no idea how much of each I added. The mix retains water but doesn't stay wet. The plant seems happy but would be happier if I remember to fertilize. I lost a new shoot due to knocking it off when taking the plant out for the summer but I see more nubs developing. I went to the local plumbing store and bought PVC piping and a three way PVC connector and made a large T trellis for future climbing and that makes it nicely akward to move the plant around.
If the cuttings already have aerial roots, just plant so that the lowest roots are buried. If there are no live roots, dip in rooting hormone and plant in some light 'soil' like vermiculite, perlite, fine bark or moss, then keep warm (maybe use a seedling mat if your weather is currently cool) to encourage rooting.
Vanilla seems to be a very easy plant to grow. I tend to forget it so I've just moved it closer to my piper nigrum since they need similar care (they often grow together). I've read that the vine becomes very large and will cling to everything but I grow passiflora so I'm not too concerned about that.
Good luck with your cuttings!

Sorry Junebug, I started replying before seeing yours, got involved in something else, then came back to it. Thanks for replying. : )
