Default Spathoglottis

Is this really considered an orchid. They seem to grow freely and in the ground. They have a orchid flower. I have sorbet "Plum Passion" What's the scoop?

Hi Carol,

I believe there are various orchids which people have found growing freely as weeds in various parts of the USA.

North of the UK we have Dactylorhiza growing freely in heath land, but unfortunately not as prolifically as I've heard some of the ones in the USA grow.

But yes, spathoglottis is considered an orchid.

I have been reading past posts and wondering so few are collecting this type. Is this better for a flower bed rather than a clay pot?

I think they are some of the prettiest orchids, ever. Unfortunately, they just don't do well as 'house plants'.

I would think if your soil is right for them you could plant them in the garden.

Many people in the UK plant Cyps in the garden but unfortunately I have a very clay like soil and so can't do it and grow them in pots outside instead.

I have some customers from Florida who plant their Spathoglottis right in the ground, making a border garden! They are very pretty in mass. Good luck!
