You've got a good point there...I was also thinking about putting it in a glass terrarium type setup. Probably more sensible than an old aquarium (which I have no room for right now anyway).

If it helps, I also grow mine in potting soil. All of my Jewel Orchids that have grown in Sphagnum moss have died and withered away over time here's mine growing in potting soil (picture from a couple months ago):

Beautiful display!!!!! Regular potting soil huh? What about drainage? Let me know. I have mine in bark/soil mix. I was afraid that it would rot and so I slightly burried my Ludisia and Macodes in the bark layer which is on top of the soil.

Soil!!?? really? My....what to do, what to do. Looks like I'll have to do some serious research on my new little baby before I repot it. Any other people using soil out there?

WOW! They look really happy! What other Jewel orchids do you grow in soil? For how long did they survive in sphag moss?

I have a 12 year old ludisia discolor that is in potting soil. In fact I've never repotted it. It's an office plant and gets watered once a week if I remember. It blooms faithfully every year. It's sitting atop a bookcase next to a west facing window. I just cut off 6 finished spikes. Mine has developed a trailing habit, and I'm not sure if that's due to it's age or culture. It has pretty much taken over the entire top of the bookcase ala Wandering Jew. Anyway, it's doing well so I'm not going to mess with success.

BTW, I have given cuttings of this plant to several people who have had good success rooting the cuttings.

Terri, When you talk about soil, are you referring to black soil or peatmoss??
I grew mine in peat and perlite or BX mix will work well too, they love it

Gloria, it's in just regular old houseplant potting soil that you can get anywhere.
