Hi Judi,

You're correct, they do prefer cooler temps...the key is to keep the root zone cool. I do this by using the clay pot method; basically using sphagnum moss in a clay pot and placing the clay pot in stand water (rain water). Through evaporation the roots stay cool all day. It's been working so far. I initially thought about building an elaborate cooling table of some sort, but I figured I'd try the cheaper method first.

I've seen some growing DISA's in cold root boxes (ice box)...for the cooler night temps...and yes beautiful flowers...might be my next attempt just to be different

When I lived in South Africa, I'd often encounter clumps of Disas growing with their roots in flowing streams on top of Table Mountain, usually in a protected crevice or depression sheltered from the fierce winds. Always an amazing sight to come around a corner on a hiking trail and find dozens of these things in full bloom.

The one on the right is Disa atricapilla, it grows in a different habitat than Disa uniflora (left).

There is a lot of variation in the height of Disa uniflora. They're somewhere between 8" to 10" tall all the way up to 1 m tall.
