The spike is now 13 1/2 inches tall and has been growing at 1 to 1 1/2 inches a day for the last week.
It has taken 3 months now to get here anyone out there know what would be a normal time span for the spikes to develop?
Too long
I think it depends what species. My tancarvilleae X pulcher alba hybrid took about 3 months until the buds were fully formed then it seemed to sit around for a couple of weeks waiting for a temperature change before the flowers opened.
It's well worth the wait. You just need to keep the insects off it until then.
Thanks it has started growing faster lately ...still about 1 inch daily now but it does look as if bud will be exposed soon.Bugs ar not a problem since its winter here and its indoors....I have been very diligent about bugs so far.
Once we have our new house built my Phaius may end up moving indoors too. I think my shadehouse is too bright anyway and they take up a lot of room that could be used by other plants that appreciate the conditions.
Last flowering I managed to save the buds from grazing insects only to have them beaten to bits by some strong winds a couple of days after they opened. At least I got some pics first...
