Phaius & Calanthe culture question Male
Default Phaius & Calanthe culture question

Hi Everyone

I just got some plants of Phaius Callosus, P. Pauciflorus, P. Flavus (spotted form) and Calanthe Pulchra. The grower had them in a highland area at 28c maximum. Well Bangkok gets an easy 10c hotter in the warmer parts of the year.

I have seen these species all discribed as cool to warm growing. So I am confused. Does this mean they can be grown on both cool or warm climates or is it dependant on where they particular plant or clone originates from.

I can grow them in a cooled wardian case at 19c night to 25c day. Or can I get away with having them outside here in Bangkok? I am tempted to make a shaded area on my balcony and see what temps I can maintain. I just dont want to cook them.

Currently I have a few Spathoglottis and palms doing OK on the balcony, and I had a P. Tankervilliae there for a while, but the hot season was a little bright. I could put up a shade cloth fixture for them.

I grow a Phaius cardioglossa and this one originates from Thailand. It grows very well in intermediate conditions. I'm assuming the Phaius and Calanthe you have require the same temperature range. The area I grow it in usually doesn't get higher than 80 F and no lower than 70 F. This one goes deciduous during winter.

I think the Calanthe likes it warmer. However what I read on the web is that they all grow in lowland to highland areas. I guess what I am trying to find out is will this mean I can grow them in Bangkok lowland temps or not? Will it matter if the plant itself came from highland stock?

I have found that wherever in the world, when in doubt, start in the shade.

It's possible the plant may need to adjust to warmer temperatures if it came from a higher altitude.

Wiz says Phaius Callosus grows well in highland or lowland of Bogor, Indonesia. Dappled sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight.

No cultivation advice is offered in wiz for calanthe pulchra. Says it is a species.
