Wow again - 18" to 72" in 7 months! Almost 8" per month!

I am curious how it grows otherwise. Does it simply ramble on with a single stem/lead?

Do you have to sever the lead to get branching and does it branch prolifically, or just kick out a single new lead and carry on rambling?

When will it flower and produce pods?

When will you establish Sue's Vanilla Plantation!

Don't expect the Grand Opening of Sue's Vanilla Plantation anytime soon!

The only thing I've read on this plant is that it needs to grow 15 ft before it'll flower. I also read somewhere that the 15 ft must include the vine going up and down...but that one I don't know if I really put any faith into (sorry if it was anybody here )

Hi Robert

I have it planted in a 1-gallon nursery pot filled with African Violet soil. We have a 6 ft wooden pole in the center of the pot with tree fern totems attached with green wire ties. It's in dappled bright sun, gets misted quite often and it's watered and fed along with all the other 'chids.

I hope this helps you

Default SPRING TREILLIS FOR VANILLA

Hi all,

My 18 feet long vanilla planifolia vines go up to only 4/5 feet high! There's how I do that:-

Wrap about 10 to 15 turns of stiff galvanised wire (3 mm) around a piece of 8 inch diam plactic pipe. Pull the wire out from onto the pipe and you get something like a stacked coiled spring. Extend this spring uniformly to the desired length, and you are done.

Screw one end of your extended coil into a 8/8.5 inch pot and train your vanilla vine along and around the wire. I usually keep the vine in place with soft pigtail wire or pipe cleaners and fill the void inside the spring with coconut fibre for additional anchorage for the axial roots.

10 turns around an 8 inch pipe will grow a vine up to 20 feet, nicely and uniformly stacked to a height of 4 feet... No need to look up ... or climb the pole to pollinate!

Hope you find interesting.

Thanks Susanne for your appreciation. Always remember:
Coil the vine for effective space management... How you achieve it does not really matter ... just coil it and reduce growing space by at least 4:1

Jack and the bean stalk? There is always a space issue...

Cheers from Mauritius

That is really cool, Jean Pierre! Thanks. I'll do just that with my variegated V. planifolia too.
