I love jewels!!!! I really need to get some. Too bad you're all the way down under. Well, too bad for me. For you it just means no worrying about me sneaking in at night to steal your jewels!

Just kidding. I would never do that. I'd try to buy or trade for them first! lol.

The Anoectochilus roxburghii and Macodes sanderiana are my favorites! Beauties!

Beautiful!
Do these need more water than Ludisia discolor or is it your climate that you can grow them in sphagnum?

yeah sanderiana is my favourite also followed by roxburghii but they are all nice in different ways so its really hard to pic a favourite to be honest.

glad you enjoyed the pics. I have become increasingly interested in jewel orchids lately. Not many people growing them here either so i thought they need some promoting.

They can be treated the same way as ludisia without any problems. I live in the subtropics in Australia. Climate would be comparible to central coastal florida in the USA. I give them a good mist usually once a day unless its wet and humid and this is all the water they get. I also try not to keep them too damp during winter but not dry either. Watering carefully in the mornings during winter so they don't stay wet during the nights and get any fungal problems. During summer i mist them just about any time as soon as they show signs of drying.

Don't worry about me, Orchidlover. I don't have any plans to go to Australia any time soon. I'd like to, but just don't have the time or money for now. Maybe after college I can get a job that involves traveling!

I really like Jewels too! Yours look very healthy and hardy. I have a few "jewel" species, and some larger terrestrials too. I'm not too attentive to mine, but they mostly do alright, some do well, and some . . . (oh well).

I grow mine in a mix of coco chips, charcoal, diatomite and some "soil-less" planting mix. Works better for the "true" terrestrials than for the jewels, but is O.K. for all.

I posted some pictures of a few jewel species a while ago, and I really should post some more on these fascinating orchids.

You've done a great job with yours . . . thanks for sharing.

Ed

They are very pretty! Thanks for sharing the pics. Jewels are one species that I know absolutely nothing about, but I sure like looking at them

Thanks you for explaining this to me. A while ago I bought my first Ludicia discolor and realy like that plant, but the markings on the leaves from the species you showed are pretty awesome too!
Please show us the plants again once they flower.

I was pretty surprised to find out the flowers from Ludisia discolor smelled very nicely! What about your species? Any idea?
