Bletilla striata dormancy indoors? Male
Default Bletilla striata dormancy indoors?

I live in an apartment and I'm thinking of getting some Bletilla striata and growing them under lights. If I intend to grow them in pots indoors, how should I handle their dormancy? For example, do I just stop watering (or water much less) like any other deciduous orchid, or should I unpot and store them in the fridge? I found an old thread from 2010 from someone with a similar question, but I'm wondering if we've learned anything in the decade since.

When they go dormant you can move them out of your lighted area, since they don't have any leaves. Save the prime real estate for things that are producing. Mine live outside, I don't give them any special treatment - they get watered (rain or sprinklers) and it doesn't matter. You can put them someplace where they can be cool (window, laundary room, porch). They can tolerate light frost easily, I don't know how cold they can go but they certainly can take significant cold. Plant Delights Nursery lists tham as hardy to USDA zone 6b. Which is really cold. So I think just put the pots out on porch or balcony and forget about them until spring.

I'm not sure if they need lower temps during dormancy. I leave mine always outside so I can't say the results of indoor dormancy.
I sugest that you investidate how is the climate in their habitat but I suspect there will be lower temps.

I have some in pots and a clump in the ground. The one in the ground does much better - it has spread out, to many plants. It certainly doesn't get any special treatment over the winter. The only think that slows it down is the cement sidewalk next to it. (Bad clay soil is no problem) It dies back in fall, new sprounts appear in spring, with no help from me.

Of course, mine don't get frost. But frost (even fairly hard frost) is certainly OK for them.

Yeah people grow them in their gardens in my area. I'd try them on my balcony if it wasn't so shaded.

I wouldn't worry much about the light level, these are very forgiving. Think "wildflowers" not "houseplants"
