hey there ob,

so, we made a trip to a nursery over the weekend and poking around the plants, my eye caught this thing with some good bulbs and new "keikis" (do you call them that in this case?).

anyway, because i can't help loving veg prop orchids i had to have it. i had never heard of it, but oh well...so, then i got home and actually looked it up and meh...seems like not great info that i can find. anybody got tips?! i know its a hybrid, but i'm tring to take the easy way and have someone tell me how to grow it in my windowsill

and i know, i shouldn't buy orchids that i don't know anything about, but you know...thanks in advance for any insite

"veg prop" (vegetative propagation) = division (as opposed to seedling either by seed propagation or mericlone) is how I'd interpret it but tmoney will have to verify.

This one is a primary hybrid, Chy. bractescens x Chy limminghii (limminghei) . I think you got a St. Bernard puppy ... both parents tend to range between "large" and "huge". You will need a larger windowsill.

Think you'll be happy with this. I've have Chysis bractescens and limmingeii for ~2yrs growing and blooming. Large pbulbs will develop and get top-heavy so I have mine sitting in larger clay pots(some folks use hanging baskets) on the edge of growlights in large bark, lg. perlite and charcoal. Water and airflow is abundant in warmer temps but water is being lessened now. Mine are semi-deciduous. Spikes will come from lower part of pbulb and are fragrant with keels(look like a row of teeth!). TryInternet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia

Chysis bractescens requires a lot of water during the growing season. I keep it in wet sphagnum moss.

hey all, thanks for the tips! ye, the bulbs look pretty big and lots of new ones growing all over the old ones. and indeed it was being grown in a hanging basket as the web sheets i saw recommended. oh boy...maybe not the best choice as our windows are crowded already!

also yes, by veg prop i mean vegetative propogation. we took 3 or 4 and planted separately when we got home cause they had fallen on on the trip back. probly wait till spring to take more

so they don't want a hard winter rest, then. just reduction in water and ferts?

thanks agian!
