Personally I dig up mine mostly because I want to look at the tubers . However, for me it also helps quite a bit with storage. If I leave them outside in their pots, I risk something bad happening to them, from falling or something else. If I move the pot inside, I'm very sure that it will be filled with ants by the time they wake up. So I dig up the tubers and store them in plastic cups with moss.

On another topic, my Habenaria medusa are also waking up! (Although no blooms yet)

Oh definitely do it! I don't think that summer heat is a problem... these are warm-growers. And have some of the most intriguing flowers in orchid-dom.
