I do not need to repot it, ever!

It is planted in Hygrolon, a material that do not degrade over time. The only thing I do is take away excess moss now and then.
The pictures below show how I plant my moiture loving plants in pots (plant in the pictures is NOT Masdevallia bangii):

I fill up the lower part of the pot with hygrolon bits and expanded clay pellets (LECA)

I roll a long strip of hygrolon around the roots

and finally I put the hygrolon cylinder into the pot

How do the roots grow when its all tightly bound like that. Do they grow between the holes of the hygrolon?

It is not particular tight, I do not compress the spacer forming the sandwich between the two layer.
It is like laying several sheets of Hygrolon ontop of each other on a table. the material is anything but dense.

That is lovely! So tiny and yet so perfect; I would love to have one of those, but from the looks of your setup, I do not possess the proper environment for that to thrive. I do like the natural moss growing in your pots...I have wondered if the native moss growing in the shady areas around my house would be suitable for orchid use.

Now that's an interesting way to pot them up. Thanks for the explanation and the pictures, very neat.

No, I can´t.

Never had the possibility to see the AquaMap.
The only thing I know is that when Hygrolon was intruduced on the market Firstrays came out with something claimed to be similar. Just a copy on apperance as there had be no time for extensive long term testing.

I have followed the developement of Hygrolon and can say that the extensive testing done before the introduction.

I can only trust the long term tests done on Hygrolon and what has come out in how to use it. It is not a wonder material for everyone but under the right condition it is superb. And what I have seen about AquaMap it is a desktop copy without the optimization under long time actually growing conditions.
