Epidendrum porpax in bloom - Orchid Board

I can't believe I have so many growing and blooming since I've brought them in. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't leave them in. Here is another, Epidendrum porpax that just bloomed this morning. It has several other buds on it.

Wow! I like that one! Very cool. I bet it was the change in conditions that sparked the flowering race.

Thanks Tin, you're probably right. Conditions are a lot more stable. Not the extreme swings that you get with Iowa weather.

My little plant has one bud just about ready to open...I've read that this Epi. porpax like to be kept fairly wet in winter, then dry out from March-June.
Beats the heck out of my 'hose everything down at once' practice. Maybe I'll get two buds next year!

What a pretty little thing, Julie! My guess is that if you kept them inside all of the time, you wouldn't get that trigger that tells them all to start flowering. Whatever you're doing... keep doing it - and keep sharing those lovely blooms with us!

I begining to think so. They are starting to slow a bit. I've tried to slow watering on the ones that need a rest but, they shrivel so bad that I've decided to just keep the water coming and cut back on the food. I think as long as they get water they won't miss all that fertilizer.

Whenever you have a plant that "should" get a rest, if the bulbs start to shrivel they should get enough water to stop that from happening...in your case a reduction rather than a stop to water seems to be what they want

Any time there's a reduction, it follows that the feedings get recued too

Hi again, Julie - according to the culture sheet (Baker) on this plant, the only dry(ish) months it enjoys in nature are Feb.-March. The other months provide 4 to 13 inches of rain per month. This is my first bud (just the one), but I've had this plant for a few years; it's on a chunk of grapevine, and has just really shown growth in this past year - maybe that 30" of rain/month we got through most of the summer months was what it wanted. Even without flowers, a neat little creeper. I wait for more buds!
