Bud, there are a distinct different version, Sophronitis cernua var mineira (name corrected). It has more carmine red flower that is more rounder.

I had suggested soph coccinea for the project plant for 2012, but someone said that it needs cool conditions to flower. Does this one require cool conditions, its a stunning flower....

It do tolerate higher temperatures than S. coccinea. Though I think it need a distinct cooler rest, to display a synchronized flower explosion. Mine have a tendency to grow non-synchronized and thereby flower on one bulb at the time due to lack of proper cold rest, I believe.

You may not care of synchronized growth and flowering when the plant is small (3-10 bulbs). But it does matter for the display, when they grow larger like this:

Gorgeous, Magnus! Your plant is quite an amazing specimen, too. This has long been one of my favorite orchid species.

One of my first. For me a slow grower but very rewarding. The flowers are like an old friend. Your plant, Magnus, Is very well grown. I'd also like to mention. Your photographs (specifically Porpax gigantea) are what drew me to orchidboard. Thanks
