My first Dendrobium cuthbertsonii!

After hearing from some fellow OB members, I decided that a cuthbertsonii might not be beyond my ability to provide the right conditions. I am now the proud owner of a Dend. cuthbertsonii 'Bicolor Splash' x 'Pumpkin'. I can't take credit for the bloom, as it arrived that way, but I have kept it alive now for almost 3 weeks and even the flower is still in perfect condition! (minus the crease in one petal from shipping, lol). It was a "large" enough plant that I even divided it to try a piece in a new terrarium set-up.

I think the lip looks like the hood of a flame hotrod!

Soo cute, this is one that I might have to add to the list to try to find come spring.

Also, I might as well ask it now, because I am pretty sure there are a lot of people who want to know it; what are the conditions it likes? Does it need a winter rest?

I honestly don't know too much about this little guy yet. The species originates from New Guinea at high altitudes. It's a cool grower and needs high humidity and excellent water quality (RO, distilled, etc). I've found that humidity and water quality really are the key factors in succeeding with orchids like this, as I'm finally succeeding with a couple Masdies and other sensitive orchids now that I'm providing both.

Even though it's a cool species, mine has handled daytime highs of about 85F since I've had it, as my dorm room lacks AC.

This is the thread that first gave me the confidence to try it. Ron Hanko has much more experience with this and other little gems of the orchid world.

tiny delicate plant and what a nice bloom...I am given small tiny plants by my friends and I am scared I might kill them...so far...I havent killed any of my plants...I guess one must learn and do correct research on every plant they own...one of my greatest mistake was overwatering...almost killed my phals...whew

find it weird that the flowers are 3 times bigger than the actual plant, although weird they are just gorgeous.... Had one, inexperience led to it's demise, but will surely try it in the future again...... knowledgeable this time round.......

congrats! remember to keep it well ventilated, moderate moisture levels, and cool. this plant enjoys a nighttime drop in temps, preferably to the 50s. bright cool light if you can...

From my research, it does want a bit of a winter rest - but it's more in the fact that it doesn't want massive amounts of water. It still wants to be a bet moist, but not as much as throughout the growing season. And the seasonal drop in temperatures is very important.

I have one now and waiting to see what will happen come this winter in my terrarum. I'm hoping the temperatures will be good in there, but we'll see.
