I think the something you refer to is the spike. It looks dead as it sits there, then starts to swell on the end. The spike itself is thin like sewing thread!

here's an example of what it can do, using your image:
original on the left, photoshopped on the right. subtle, but it does improve the appearance. of course, the difference is more noticeable on my computer with the higher res version. I used a strength of 25% for the highlights, and no change to the shadows.

Not in the orchidarium. I have several mounted to sticks, etc. using moss and for that purpose, sphagnum works fine. Just not in the windowsill plants.

Congratulations Ross!! I used to think, once a Dendro killer, always a Dendrokiller. But you have proven me wrong, and give me new hope for myself (even though technically I have never killed one). You know the blooms remind me a lot of Phalaenopsis lobbi
