Tindo I had this under the back porch from late spring up until a few weeks ago [we're just starting winter now] inside my tiny plastic GH under a 150watt metal halide light and 2 48watt compact flouroescent, daylight lights with a little sun coming in from the side.

See the attached images; you can just see it in the third photo with the mounts on the back of the [very cramped] plastic GH, below the fan.

It came into spike in that situation sometime before I moved my collection over to my converted plant shed GH.

Ross, I find having them mounted helps me not to overwater them... how often do you water in winter?

I sprayed twice a day, maybe 3 times during the hottest part of summer, dropping back in Autumn to every second day, down to once and now down to once a day every few days or once a week or so depending on overall if the rest of the mounts need a good spray [and it helps increase the humidty].

Damian, I haven't gone through a winter yet with mine. I got the first one in April this year. Right now I plan to stay with daily watering, maybe every other day. They are in small plastic pots planted in big charcoal chunks which don't hold a lot of water. They dry out by evening.

What is the genetics of that? Onc. Carnival Costume X Tolu Jairak Rainbow???

To add to where some Tolumnia's come from, some are caribbean, some are from India near the himalayas. The Himalayans get NO precipitation and live on cacti. Every day they get watered for a FOG that rolls in... That's one harsh climate and proof that these lil guys have evolved to take a beating!

Hi Ross, if I were to go potted, big chunks sound good

If you keep them at the same temperature as they have been in during summer/autumn then maybe they will not slow down in growth? I think maybe lower humidity might mean they need more frequent watering? Mine were previously in 65% humidity, which I'm trying to regain in their new home.

Possibly, I'm not sure For a plant taking so little space, care or attention it has been very rewarding

Damian, by large chunks I'm talking 3/4" or so. Just enough to hold up the plant. The humidity in the window area right now might run in the 60% range but in winter drops to below 40% - probably as low as 30% so drying isn't an issue, keeping things moist is the issue for me. They will have lots of light - south window plus 3 55watt CF bulbs. I take window screen out in winter to increase light a bit. I get maybe 2500-3000 FCs.

Thanks Fren and Darren . Ross I was thinking about setting up a full on window growing area indoors [love yours BTW ] for orchids that like it hotter than what it is in my shed GH, but we already get condensation dripping down the windows at night..
