Laelia liliputiana - Orchid Board

I have been collecting rupiculous laelias for about a year just for the fun of seeing whether or not I could grow and bloom them. They are growing just fine but I have only had one that has produced buds. I have several in sheath that are showing possibilities for spring flowers.

I decided to get this little one for the curiosity in the diminutive size. Even if it never bloomed it would still be fun to grow. It currently has three new growths. The p-bulbs are about 1/2" and the leaves are 1". The new growth comes out a purple hue in cool weather or bright light. The flowers are tiny 1/2" and white to pink or lavender, held high above the foliage.

I have one of those. Haven't been able to get it to blooms & not sure what I'm doing wrong, but -- as you said --it is an incredibly tiny cute plant

I have about 30 rupicolous. They are temperamental little beotches. LOLOLOLOL, But, I love them to death.

About half of my rupiculous laelias are primary hybrids that I got from Sunset Valley Orchids. That could be the reason for the vigor that I am seeing in them. Some of them are making four and five new growths right now. Just hope they will bloom for me.

By the way, Oliver is my favorite movie.

Hi Jerry! I don't have this one but I do have a Laelia reginae that I have bloomed twice now under my T5 lights. It's potted in an epiweb basket with epiweb chunks. It's growing like a weed! I also have a Laelia milleri that I am growing under the same lights and haven't been able to bloom yet...although I have multiple sheaths, I still haven't seen any blooms for the last couple of years....I think it may need higher lighting. It's potted in a clay pot with LECA, but not using s/h culture, just regular culture. It is about to grow out of it's pot soon! I just wish it would bloom!

I find it interesting your Laelia liliputiana is growing in moss. Is there a reason for this? Do you grow all of your rupiculous laelias in moss?

I have a beginners' question- what does rupiculous mean?

Rupicolous refers to orchids that are thriving among or inhabiting rocks. When I received my Laelia reginae from Andy's Orchids it came potted in a little clay pot with granite chips and rocks for potting medium.

Hi David! I bought mine from an ebay seller, cschaz, who has great ratings! He doesn't have any listings currently, but he usually has quite a few of the rupiculous laelias for sale throughout the year. I think he may also have a website...I think this is it: Chaz's Orchids. You could try contacting him and see if he might be able to help you!
