Before I cause any confusion: I don't mean growing cool-loving orchids... I mean... We live in cold places!

Snowy, cold places where we fight to keep up the humidity in the winter. Do you think we love our orchids more than those lucky Hawaii folk? Hmm?

Just a thought I had looking at the scene below this snowy morning....

I'm with you on that thought! Thank goodness for our little patches of paradise indoors

Ironically, at the moment we have above freezing temps and freezing rain at the moment and it is just a mess. Our normal is more like -20C and this is not good for our perennials and trees. They may be fooled into thinking spring has arrived, only to get blasted with a cold spell in a week or two. And all our snow cover is melting off. Can't win

During the winter, I miss my garden and that is why I grow things indoors. I have the flowers, the fruits, and the fragrant-leaf plants both indoors and out, just different types.

I hear we are going to get more of the white stuff, too. :|

My plants are what gets me through the winter with my sanity reasonably intact. I think we do appreciate our plants more, we pamper them and suffer inconveniences because of them (like higher electrical and heating bills). You don't hear too many Hawaiians or even Floridians discussing the merits of different types of light fixtures - they're arguing about shade cloths instead!

Still, the juxtaposition of tropical plants and snow outside is priceless. Here's mine.

This is one of my photos from last January. Several of these are currently in bloom again along with others, but I didn't do a group shot this year.

Glad to know that I am not the only nut that loves taking pics of blooming orchids with snow in the background. I do the same thing, I just love the contrast of tropical flowers indoors and winter outdoors.

Gorgeous!
I love seeing the flowers with snow you guys.
It's really beautiful.

My house actually got 10 minutes of snow this year! For the first time in 40 years.
That was a pretty big event for us lol

Ahhhh...but because we ARE in the cold northern clime we don't have nearly the bug problems the poor folks down south experience on a regular basis.

Of course, you'd likely never hear me complain about being able to grow my orchids outside year round..bugs and all.

We certainly are challenged but anything worth having will be as lovely as this shot. And it gives me the chance to try out cooler growing species and boost my ego!

I'm there with you guys. I have a few windowsill orchids, but the rest of my collection I stuff into terrariums where its cool but humid.
