Really cool looking mounts, thanks for sharing how you set them up. I looked with interest at Hygrolon but haven't tried it yet. There is a supplier here in the UK so it's really tempting. Great to see your use of it.

Hygrolon prototype setup
Yay! My hygrolon & moss mix has finally arrived! I was so inspired by the hygrolon uses posted in this thread that I now have 4 separate projects/experiments planned:
Wick watering in pots like Mossman did
A miniature fountain with mini phals
Using a hygrolon wick with either BetterGro phal media or with sphag
Self watering mounts made of Pot Fillers and hygrolon (because I love mounted orchids, but can't water daily)
Unfortunately it will take me a few months to get around to doing all these project/experiments. Right now I've got a large hygrolon-epiweb slab sitting in some water & I'm very impressed with the wicking ability of the fabric. I do notice though that the bottom half is holding more moisture than the top. Not sure if this would cause a problem for an orchid on a mount with a water reservoir.
Mossman, I'd love to see updated pics if you get the chance!

Hello Mossman, my fellow Norwegian. Not many of us around.
How's your hygrolon mounts working and how is the moss progressing?
Would love to see some updated pictures.
This thread was inspirational and I'm considering getting some hygrolon to play around with.

Silje - If you can easily get hold of hygrolon, yay, but there's a new competitor out on the market - for things that like to have a lot of water capacity around, in your dry conditions, its thicker size may work to your advantage, see https://www.firstrays.com/aquamat.htm
I've ordered things from the USA before, but the postage to the southern hemisphere is quite unforgiving on budgets... :/

Discus, this is one of the advantages of having one foot on each side of the equator.
Hydrolon and Epiweb are Swedish products and to get hold of them in Norway is easy and cheap. And then there are all those kind family members and friends that are more than willing to send an expat some of the things she's missing from her old country, so shipping is basically free.
Got to say there is some kind of reciprocity here...biltong and droewors are hard to come by in Norway and are seen as amazing treat by those that have visited me so far, so we've got this thing going: Norwegian chocolate and vanilla sugar, LECA, perlite (and Hydrolon?) goes down and biltong, droewors and dried mangos go up. Everybody's happy.

I saw some of that sweet Norwegian brown cheese (I can't remember the name) in Checkers in Grahamstown a year or two ago. I tried it many years ago on a Norwegian research vessel and found it went very well with toast.
It is quite handy to have a team of dedicated purchasing agents waiting for your call in other countries...!
I have family in Europe and the USA, but I always feel bad getting them to post me things. :/
