Home built Orchid Case
:Hi folks. Haven't posted in a while, but I thought you might like to see my setup. I built this large orchid case from 2 old sashes and, and built the rest out of pine. Moldings, and beadings were made with 100 year old English molding planes. Bottom was made from white cedar, tongue and grooved to allow movement from wet and humidity. 2 old victorian cast iron supports screwed into each side door, hold open shelves plus one vertical rack to hang cork mounted orchids on. Cedar shelf across bottom for shorter plants, along with drip trays, heh, if you want to know were made from Krispe Kreme donut trays bought from the antique store I work at. These were covered with large squares of slates to set plants on. The top allows for other houseplants to sit. Top can come off if need be. Because I love to grow other plants, than just orchids, there are also sinnigias, epicias, african violets, etc in with the orchids. Several sinnigias, a Phalaenopsis, and a african violet are in bloom now. A sopronitus that has already bloomed twice this year, is at it again. A dendrobium is putting up a stalk. There is a large 12 volt computer fan in the top which circulates the air, and four growing lights in the canopy. A large door with a window in each side with latches. I painted lovely flowering vines on the case pediment front. All in all a most rewarding and classy project for this naturalist cabinetmaker to make
