Last winter I downsized from two large Home Depot-type shelves to one smaller shelf, following a job loss and subsequent need to simplify my life. I've since thought about going back to the big shelves, but the plants I've got left (about 120) are actually doing much better and blooming more often now that they're crammed together: maybe the crowding has created more of an artificial "microclimate"...?
I took one of the shelves and sawed it in half to create a shelf along the back for the Catts, Laelias, Dendrobiums, and other higher-light plants. Lower-light plants are on the bottom. Lighting is a four-foot, six-bulb T5 unit. Warm-mist humidifier on the floor in front of the shelf, and a fan helps distribute the mist a little. Even in the unused dining room, average humidity is still up around 50%. Thanks for looking! -Stephen
