The Orchid Mining Co. Orchid Display
Here is a photo series of me and friends setting up my orchid display last week.
- The blank slate...
- ...the mine entrance is added along with a few immitation rocks and the styrofoam base...
- ...the plants are brought in to begin the staging process...here are a few from my collection...
- ...this is my Ctt. Gold Digger 'Fuchs Mandarin', which will be placed as the centerpiece...the photo was taken after the first bit of drama it caused, but before the second it was involved in...I fell into our swimming pool while cleaning it, and it actually fell over on top of itself before we got it secured in the display...yikes!
- ...here is my Dendrobium Adastra just hanging around...
- ...the mulch has been delivered...
- ...here is my friend Tom, who was in coherts with me for putting the display up...he has just secured the sign and is getting the mine entrance backdrop secured in place...
- ...more plants being staged...
- ...ah, the trees have arrived!
- Here we have moved the large tree to the opposite side to try and hide our neighbor's prop, and we've started wiring a few plants to our not-so-live tree...
...more to follow on the next section...

- ...things continue to take shape as more plants are placed within the display in accordance with the design's color flow...
- ...and after 13 hours, here ends day one.
- Day 2 begins with the continued placement of plants along with moss and ferns to cover bare spaces and unsightly containers...
- ...from the top down and from the back forward, progress continues...
- ...here I am after creating the mulch pathway to the mine entrance, providing detail work to the center of the display before continuing on the perimeter...
- ...here is my friend Vicki helping with moss and fern placement...the mine cart, which will sit on the pathway to the mine is being assembled in the foreground to the right...
- ...and after a total of 20 hours of work from the blank slate stage, here is the Orchid Mining Company waiting for judgement!
- And the winner is...my Dendrobium Blue Twinkle, which took first place in its class, plus a trophy for Best Dendrobium Specimen Plant in the entire show! I originally wanted to place this plant in the display, but it wouldn't work in the design, so I entered it as an individual plant.
- From within the display, here is my Ascocenda Suksamran Sunlight 'Maria Genovese' HCC/AOS (sorry about teh blurriness). It won first place in its class, and a trophy for Best Ascocenda in the show!
- This one was in the mine cart in the display; it is my Cattleya leuddemanniana, which was a gift I received from my friend Vicki a few years back when it was a seedling. It won first place for Cattleya species exhibited by a hobbyist, and a trophy for Best in Show for any Species flower by a Hobbyist...and let's not forget the display itself...

...wow...it won a First Place trophy for a hobbyist floor exhibit, a trophy for the Best Show Themed Exhibit (the theme for the show was "Jewels in Paradise", and it also received an AOS (American Orchid Society) 87 point Silver Certificate, which is an award based on national standards!!! On top of that, there were two other trophies awarded to plants in the display as well as two additional AOS flower quality awards and many first, second and third place ribbons. All and all, I'd say it went well, in fact, very well!

David, I'm so proud of you, your talents in creating the display, and your growing expertise. That is a creation to win all awards in my book.
Congratulations on all your awards! Your plants and display are fantastic.

Wow David!!! Your display is better than what I remember seeing even at the WOC. I counted at least 12 award ribbons. You deserved them all. Beautiful display, beautiful plants and great idea for design

Thanks everyone for your replies...it's appreciated.
I hope it wasn't too difficult seeing all the pics the way I had them spread out here...I tried to create an album, but every time I loaded the photos, the order would get messed up. Oh well, at least they are in order here.
