A layer of sand or fine gravel can solve the gnat problem, but that may not be the best solution for you. Personally, I would go with a carnivorous plant. I've had too many failures with Venus flytraps though. I had much more success with sundews and Sarracenia purpurea, a pitcher plant. If my terrarium hadn't gotten moldy and started pumping out fluorescent yellow mushrooms, I'd still have those natural pest controls.
Have you had any fungal problems in your terrarium? I'm thinking of trying again by sterilizing soil (if I decide on plants that grow in soil) in a solar oven.
