lol no secret here, I'm a newbie at this too, Marissa. I went to pages and pages and see familiar instruction. Here's how to do it.
-Drainage layer: gravel, hydroton, rock, whatever that doesn't break down.
-Charcoal layer to absorb chemicals
-A layer of moss or something similar to separate the soil from the drainage layer (I use paper towel, lol not sure if it works, so far I have no problem.)
-Soil of course....., for the paph, I use coconut husk mix with peat moss.
-Top layer is for decorative purpose. I use moss because I can find them outside everywhere at so I just dig a little.
Again, no secret here, lol I've just finished that terratium for a week or so, therefore I don't want to say that it works fine there, but so far so good.
You can add leaf litter or rocks so it looks more natural.

New update from my grow room lol, with lots of new bloom! Taken by my new camera (Xmas present! woo hoo!)

The blooming Dendrobium is the Christmas present from my roommate. The Phalaenopsis schilleriana in this picture bloomed last week and I gave it to a friend because it's unscented (nice round flower from Oak Hill, too bad....) Nevertheless, I have a back-up schilleriana var purpurea (on the left, from Oak Hill). Hopefully it's scented. Sweet Sugar also put on a spectacular show last week when it fully opened!

The fern is slowly dying because of the lack of humidity in winter and because of the open top. The terrarium is now a perfect place for gnat to breed (I may add venus fly trap in the spring). African violet stopped blooming for the winter. However, Paph. Iko Iko, a newly registered hybrid from Orchid Limited decided to put on a spike! Can't wait!
Thanks for watching!

Other pictures taken more recently The Oncidium is fully bloomed so I cut it down and put it in a glass --I feel bad to make them feed the spike so I decided to cut them off

It's always nice to see a windowsill full of orchids! Reminds me of my windowsill. The terrarium is great, you did a good job putting it together.

why whack the oncidium spike though? now it will only last maybe two weeks. If you would have left the blooms on the plant it would of held for 3 times longer then that
