Default My bedroom greenhouse

I bought a set of three metal shelves from lowes, two flourescent lights, and a three-light floor lamp with flourescent energy saving bulbs. I attached the flourescent lamps to the metal shelves with zip ties, and bought an outlet expander which enabled me to plug all the lights into one nearby outlet.

My setup has its own perfect little eco system, with a few spiders which take care of ALL of my pest problems. :-). all the plants in my room purify the air, and now I never wake up with a stuffy nose in the mornings :-)

I'll have to tell my husband that one. He gets a stuffy nose. never thought to put some orchids in the bedroom. Good excuse to buy some more!

I have my plants in my room too! I like looking at my plants when I'm reading in bed before sleeping. And I find it easier to control the humidity in a small room. Anyway I don't have a choice since my mom got sick and tired of the plants in the living room and kicked them out.

Nice lookin' set-up! I'm a bedroom grower myself – course I live in a pretty small, 2-bedroom, railroad-style apartment. So, not many choices of placement. But, it's the end with the southern windows. It's also my home office, so I get to spend all day long with my plants.

Glad to see you all agree! Camille, I also love to look at my plants for a while before I go to sleep also, I find it amazingly relaxing. Plus the florescent lights are easier on my eyes.

Whygreenberg, sounds like a cozy place you have! I bet it's adorable, especially with the orchids!

The window my plants are in front of is an easterly facing window so my plants get the early morning sun directly and then finish the rest of the day off with the artificial light I provide.

I love it!!! I have a similar grow rack from Lowes in my spare bedroom for my 'chids. I do sort of need another one to house a few more that are getting crowded out. I think I will go and look for one like yours. It would be perfect in front of the window in there.... Can you give a rough idea of what the dimensions are? I really love the look of your plants in the bedroom. I can see how it would be so relaxing to look at every night.

Except for that spider bit, I love your cozy nest!
Spiders in my bedroom, helpful or not, would tramatize me for life! Yikes!

I know what you mean, but I live out in the country, in Kentucky, in a house that doesn't have airtight windows, and believe me, A LOT of other bugs get in because they are attracted to the lights. I'd rather have two spiders than 10 stinkbugs, 100 ladybugs, 10 wasps, and a vast array of moths flying around my room lol.

Also: fact is, you are never more than 10 feet away from a spider in your entire lifetime. I can't remember where I read that random fact, but yeah.

You have a nice setup. It's nice to go to sleep with the orchids, but I would find it even more pleasant to wake up to orchids.

I saw a large spider in my orchids but I couldn't catch him. He is too fast for me.....I don't like spiders.

Love your bedroom set up. I also keep some chids in my bedroom..in a bay window facing east. And get pestered by friends ( who obviously do not have any orchids and therefore know nothing) who ask where don't u keep orchids. hah, hah. Good to know that i'm in good company on OB
