The Orchid Porch

Hello friends!

So I finally got all of my Japanese Orchid crew in to their new pots, and now that it's finally getting warmer here I thought I'd put them out on the porch to get some more natural sunlight and take advantage of the humidity outdoors as well.

They get shaded light, though I may still find a way to shade them a bit more during our hot summers to keep things a bit more cool. This makes it easier to water them as well. I would hang the rankake but the hooks on the porch are too short so the top plants would be right up again the ceiling of the porch.

I took the pictures when it was cloudy out yesterday. My 2 Asian Cymbidiums are also outside as well. My Cym. goeringii Tenshin 天心 seems to be recovering from shipping, finally. My Cymbidium sinense 'Da Mo Zhong Tou' 達摩中透 seems to be perking up as well.

My two Sedirea japonica are on the second shelf of the blue cart, where they get far more appropriate light since they are Phals. I'll have to watch them though and see if they just need to stay indoors in the master bathroom by the windows where it's even shadier. This will likely be the case.

I would hang up my other Vandas in their baskets, too, but we're still in the weird transition period here in Texas from winter to spring (I'll call it spwinter), where for some reason it'll be in the 70s, as high as the mid 85s some days, and then get to the low 50s, sometimes in the 40s, at night. The Vandas don't like anything below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This also means I have to take my two Sedirea japonica indoors at night as well.

That’s a beautiful setup! The stand in photo 1, where did you get it from? Or is it a diy?

You're right to be a bit cautious about the Vandas in general unless they have Neof. falcata in thier background. but Sedirea japonica is tough... I grow it outside and it does fine, lows to 40 deg F or occasionally even a bit lower though usualy only for a few hours.. My Sedirea japonica is in spike now, having been through what passes for winter in southern California. So I think you can relax with regard to that one.

Appreciate it! I personally think it could be improved upon, but my fiance likes it too so I shouldn't be too hard on myself.

The stand is called a rankake which is just "orchid hanger" in English.

I got it from this ebay store, which was probably a bit silly considering I could've gotten it from Negie Orchids instead.

That same ebay store also sells other Japanese items, like...a carpenter hammer. Because, you know, why go to the hardware store? Oh, and also tabi socks.

I joke, but they were great at staying in contact with me and letting me know about the shipping status, outside of the regular ebay emails.

I have 2 Vandachostylis 'Charm' var alba x Rhy. coelestis, would those be okay outside even though they're like 1/3 Neo. falcata?

Hmm, okay. I think I was just wanting to be cautious because my little Daruma one has been aborting buds, which is odd because I've been letting it's moss mound dry out between waterings like the other Phal I have, and fertilizing it every other watering. My only guess it would be because it's not in a humid enough place. It's been indoors most the time.

Thanks! I would like to find a stand for the Cymbidiums as well, as I've seen there's ones for the tall Cymbidium pots, but I can't see to find one. I guess it's because I don't know what the name of it would be, in Japanese or Chinese or Korean.

Maybe Asian Cymbidium Empress would know what it's called.

Probably better to protect Vandachostylis Charm x Rhynchostils coelestis... the former would be OK (if acclimated) but the latter is a warm grower, the Neof. falcata is pretty dilute in the hybrid..

Out of curiosity, does anyone know where I could find a rack like this for the tall Cymbidium pots?

I saw this in the video

"An Introduction to East Asian Cymbidiums"

and I was wondering if I could get my hands on one somehow.
