A friend who is a professor of botany told me it's acceptable to call a plant by any name that was legitimately published. He said only specialists should be expected to keep up with name changes.

Following this thinking I entered a specimen of Convolvulus tiliaceus in our cactus and succulent society show in the caudiciform section. I potted it with most of the tuber exposed; it was just making new sprouts, so the leaves were not large enough to be visible. I won a blue ribbon in that section.

i am neither smart enough, well educated enough, nor motivated enough to know what you are talking about BUT....by context clues, you clearly sidestepped a technical definition for a more nuanced one that you could defend and were rewarded for your scheme with a prize...i already admired you....now this is getting awkward

Deep into the weeds... I think that for most AOS judging centers, if someone enters a plant for judging and doesn't get the genus du jour "correct", they'll just "correct" it if they award it. If you're not submitting a plant for judging, totally no big deal. I'm sure not changing my tags... I do sort of get a kick out of trying to keep it all sorted out, but then I'm weird.

Convolvulus tiliaceus is a very old name for what is now known as Ipomoea batatas. In other words, a sweet potato. I entered a sprouting sweet potato in a competition section devoted to succulent plants with large tuberous roots or stems.

I was within the show rules because I had personally owned it for more than 6 months. If I'd used the current Latin binomial name the judges would have recognized it, laughed and ignored it at ribbon time. There are numerous tuberous-rooted succulent morning glories entered in these shows so they didn't think twice when they saw genus Convolvulus. They did have a good laugh afterward.

By the way I'm an accredited cactus and succulent judge so that made it even funnier.

Is it a true cornu-cervi or it is a primary with a red speciosa? The shape and the amount of red in it kinda makes me think that Gorgeous btw!!! <3

It is from ecuagenera. The tag is just cornu cervi.

I have no more confidence in the ID than the tag lol

I think that it is Phal. cornu-cervi. The species is highly variable. I have one that is var. chattaladae that is intensely red, and another that is generic that is almost as red. And another that is much more yellow with just red bars. (Yes, I do love the species, it grows well, also a couple of plants I got when there was a "deal" that I couldn't resist) Here's a bit of a photo gallery... Phal cornu-cervi. The alba and rubescens forms I no longer have (they didn't survive the rookie mistakes from some years back) but the others are going strong - blooming on and off all year. Fortunately, fairly small plants so they don't take up too much room.
