I was getting a little worried about Harvey too, so I looked him up on the french version of OB. The people that have it grow it in intermediate-ish temperatures with no problems. According to some people's personal experiences, it hates moisture (rots easily) so although they do well potted, mounted is the best thing if it grows in humid conditions or with a chronic over-waterer. The consensus is that it's not the easiest of plants, but it's do-able. And the blooms only last 1 week! No mentions of naked-ness like at Oak Hill
I really like Harvey, but I don't know how long he would survive with me!

Hey Sherry
This is a fun project (though... for some of us, a lot of work ) Basically from this list of ten, one plant will be picked that everybody involved in the project will buy at near blooming size, and we'll update each other on the progress as it grows. We want to see how plants respond to different environments, since we live ALL over the place, and see whose will bloom first.
If you want to play, I would suggest giving Sue (cb977) a private message. All these plants are available in Europe, Canada and the US, so you should be able to find them. I can help you find the vendors for Canada

I've already managed to kill one Harvey, but if it wins I will certainly try again.
I probably over watered the original, and the person that gave it to me, said that it probably would die, so maybe I'll have better luck the second time around...
I am still pulling for my Dear dearei though, so all of you left to vote...Come on, be a DEAR and vote for the dearei !!!

The Oak Hill people sound great. I love it when nurseries are honest! I like the challenges too. I may just go ahead and place an order from them, then hope harvey wins .
In science, even failure is a success. If we get something and it doesn't work out, than we learn something about our limitations in our respective areas. No matter what we pick, some of us will learn this tough lesson.

Royal, I was told (and have read) that D. senile (that's my Hairy ) is a problematic orchid to bring into bloom. Right now I have 2-3 spikes developing! (The reason I say 2-3, is that one of those might be a new growth.) There is also a new green shoot emerging after a winter dormancy. Guess I feel "cocky" in that several that were supposed to be a challenge have proved ho-hum for me in culture. I don't want to come across as an expert, but I do feel that I need to give it a try, if only to capture the photos

I'm not scared of a challenge...if Harvey wins, Harvey comes to my house
The only way to make this fair and practical for everybody IF Harvey does indeed take first place here would be to break this project into two factors...
one group will get the first place plant and a second group will get the second place plant. That is ONLY if Den harveyanum is the winner of the poll...
how does that sound?

Sherry, if you'd like to join us, come right along. Let me know and I'll add your name to the list...do it quickly though, time to vote is running short.

Royal,
no matter what the outcome of this project is, if you want to get beautiful, well taken care of orchids that will arrive extremely well packed, you must place an order at some point with Oak Hill. They're wonderful
