Too bad you guys didn't do rupics last year...i got rid of a bunch and could have sold you bloom size plants, for cheap. Oh well.

Altough they can be found occasionally growing on rocks, in general you're right, they are essentially epiphytes.
So I'm removing myself and my plant from this project.

Are rupics difficult to find over there? Most are fairly small growing so you wouldn't have to worry about space issues.

Didn't thought about it that way. But if it's not a rupic, obviously it doesn't make sense to participate.

Yes, I can get several species.
It's not only space but also the qty of plants to take care, which is starting to be too much for an apartment.

I think rupic crosses are ok (especially if this will allow more people to participate).

Rbarata, if you can't fit another plant and want to join in with the anceps it's ok by me (if you happen to get a rupic that would be good too haha)

If anyone is still looking for one, there is Laelia schmidtii on eBay for $28. I have gotten some bulbos from the grower in the past and have always been happy with them. I couldn't find a lot of info on this species though

Just a thought...instead of calling it a rupic project, why not make it a general catt project? The reality is, rupics are very distinctive and specific in their culture and once you cross them with a "regular" catt...well, you've dramatically changed the culture and essentially removed the traits that makes them so unique anyway so you might as well open the door to any other catt or catt cross.

I know that takes away from the original intention of a grow project but, essentially, you've already done that anyway by allowing the mixed crosses. Plus, this way those who can't provide the culture for rupics could still participate.

As I said...just a thought.

I would prefer to at least keep the project rupicolous or a rupicolous cross. The reason I was thinking the rupic crosses were ok was that this would allow people who couldn't grow a pure rupic the ability to participate. If other people feel differently I would be open to discussing it.

Well, I already bought my rupic cross for the project, under the thinking that they would count, so I would hope that they would.

The original concept behind a project is that everyone would get plant "X" and then compare the different growing techniques used by people spread all over the US and abroad and the results of those various climates/culture/conditions.

It's your project so you can do whatever you want but with so many different plants being grown it seems you're losing something in the chaos of it. Again, you can do whatever you want but with so many different plants being grown...it's not really a "project" in the truer sense of the concept. Which is why I suggested it just be a catt project...because, essentially, that appears to be the direction it has evolved into anyway.
