I did the vinegar thing, no bubbles. Attached are the closest pictures I can get with my equipment. The base I first thought was granite, but it seems to be a mixture of different types that were formed and then chiseled out to make the shape. You can see the tool marks where it was shaped. The top rock seems to be a geode type that was split open. It is lighter (in weight) than the base and has an almost sandy texture. Maybe some kind of sandstone. I can see streaks of white which might be quartz, and some sparkle which brings mica to mind.
The place where I got it, a nursery, had several, but the one I got was the only one with the depression in the front where I plan on mounting my walkeriana. |
With you new pictures, I agree - not concrete. The lower part looks like a granitic rock with potassium feldspar (See https://opentextbc.ca/geology/chapte...ating-methods/ , especially photo in the middle of the page.)
The upper part has a (gray) rim that seems to be made of quartz (silica). The lighter material could also be silica-based. With the new photos, it looks like one rock was glued on top of the other. In any case, it should be a fun mount. |
That rock is going to look so good covered in walkeriana! Good luck!

Here it is........What do you think ?? I put a little moss under it to help it to not dry out too much. I plan on misting the roots every day. I have been dunking it twice a day bare root in a clay pot. Do you think once a day with the moss added will be enough or should I mist it twice a day like it's used to ?
|
I think once a day should be good with the moss.

Very nice!

Nice mount!

Looks great.

I forgot to post a picture of my walk potted for gngrhil- although by now it looks like there is a far cooler situation going on... beautiful stone for sure. I'll be curious to see if it takes hold. You'll have to keep us posted. Rocks do get really hot then really cold according to the weather conditions, so definitely factor that in.
anyway, below is how it came (as reference) and the 2nd pic is how it is currently potted... i consider it a sort of a bonsai style (exposed root) potting lol... I actually got yet a third one that I mounted on cork. I got a great plant with 2x growths and long roots, but not quite as good as the one pictured here (from tropical orchid farm). |
It looks nice and healthy.
|
Very cool
|
What gorgeous roots!!!
|
thanks! yeah, I'm pretty happy with this guy...
I was at sunset valley orchids last week and saw they're walks and I have to say they were quite large actually... close to regular catt size... the variability on the species must be pretty wide... hope I don't have to wait for years for mine to get to flower! even with this many pbs!... I first one, a novelty varietal crossing, which if you recall was damaged by ants so I depotted and mounted on to cork, the new growth has formed leaves albeit 2/3'rds if not half of size of older leaves, and new fat roots are forming... crossing fingers... meanwhile i have the other two lol |
Watch out! They are addicting! Then there are the primary hybrids..... :)
|
got some of those too HAHA!
|
Me, too! :)
|
I don't :bua:

I don't either

Surprisingly, they are not very easy to find. The old Oak Hill Gardens had a few and I really wish I had not put off buying the few I was considering...they closed before I ordered them. Sigh. :|

I am really sad about J&L. I did a last order not long ago. I then had to email them and add that Dendrobium they have been promoting (Dendrobium auriculatum--it is one I never would have considered and now I do not know how I ever had a collection without it!).

Exactly, summer is over so I've been in a panic. I did get my order made. I have a new set up for my Masdies and I didn't want to miss some of there's so well I was forced to order. Leafmite that ones not ringing a bell, guess I'll have to go back and take a look.
I wish someone would buy it and keep it going. |
Well, I ordered from them a couple weeks ago and they said they are currently in the middle of selling to someone- that day even they were signing paperwork and working out deal, but she didn't say if the new owner was going to continue store or not. It sounded like to me the new owner would, but who knows...
I love their plants very much but after moving out west I've felt it risky buying from easy coast vendors... but years later with all the crappy plants I've gotten from west coast vendors with similar conditions, it was an unfounded feeling... sigh... been keeping an eye on their website and no changes or news on business sale... that den auriculatum I got myself earlier this year from a tip from someone on here, and let me tell you one of the most rewarding plants so far... |

I am very glad that someone is buying it! Hopefully, the business will continue! :) ---------- Post added at 04:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:42 PM ---------- Back to the walkeriana...I brought in my plants and my older one has something interesting happening. There is another odd growth wrapped up with the newest set of normal growths. If they are blooms, it is not quite what I expected. I just moved everything under lights so I hope I did not mess anything up. |

I sometimes feel like I have the only Wayndora left on the planet. I have never seen anyone else post pictures of a Wayndora. If someone else has OrchidWiz, or has a Wayndora they can post pict7res of, I would ____LOVE___ to see that to see how my Wayndora compares. I have a walkeriana primary hybrid--C. Sierra Doll x walkeriana--lovely pink flowers in late winter/early spring (when we're in the stuck in the last grey days of winter and want to see color), nice floral scent, and all on a compact plant.
Orchid Whisperer--yes, do a remake of C. Memoria Robert Strait! And sign me up for a seedling! Catherine |

Interesting thread (as always :)!) quick point of reference; Sierra Doll x walkeriana isn't a primary hybrid... species x species=primary hybrid; species x hybrid=hybrid Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

orchid whisperer, great plant/ flower! great growing! blooms easy?
Luizacft, yes great for you to join! great healthy plant, and probably the best place to be growing it ;) well not sure where you're at in brazil I suppose there are bad areas in brazil to be growing but taking a guess from image... wintergirl, great walk hybrid! what's causing troubles with it? I just got a great cross, walk x laelia anceps (lc twilight song) which i hope will do well for me outdoors... and another the infamous Lc love knot, walk x laelia sincorana (coerulea cross)... ok not sure the order of either cross but you get the picture... got em from gold country they have great primary and complex hybrids, many not listed on site... so if they(Alan) actually get back to you, they are full of opportunities for great crosses... |
Thank you! I live in a cooler part of the country. I get some cold temperatures here, but luckily it's manageable. At least, humidity is high and I am growing them in a bright piece of balcony. :-)
