Thanks! That new leaf is growing pretty fast, but I feel this is a baby, and I do not think it will give me a flower this year. I have not repotted it yet.
|
Your plant looks nice. I forgot, what color did you get?

So the white with blue lip is crossed with the blue one. There is a picture on google search where this comes out totally blue, but I don't know. Either will be nice, but I do like Blue Catts. |
It will be fun to see each one of the walkerianas bloom! We should have a really fun variety!

A lot of us got smaller seedlings, and won't have flowers until that range, if we're lucky, careful, and stir the gin just right.
|
Mine are not going to be blooming for a few years, either, I think. This project only ends when ALL of them have bloomed. :)
I ordered the Hausermann's walkeriana var. alba 'Pendentive' AM/AOS. I was ordering a few other orchids from them that I wanted and decided...why not? |
My three seedlings are pretty tiny. My 'side project' is to compare 3 very similar seedlings and see which does best, growing in 3 different styles (mounted, in a pot, or growing on top of a section of tree fern).
I think I'll do well to get blooms in 3 or 4 years. |
Mine won't be blooming either, but we can talk of progress with growth and care. And one day...a bloom :)
For those who have theirs mounted, how often are you watering? Mine seems dry all the time and i have been misting the roots twice a day. |

Mine won't bloom for a few years either. Since I got it in April as bare root with few roots, it has 1 new root and a new growth that is growing very slowly.
|
Looks like I'm joining the fun (thanks, Leafmite). Just found a C. walkeriana semi-alba Carmela at Lowe's for $6.98. It's in a 2" pot, so probably a few years from blooming....
Haven't decided if I'll leave it potted or grow it mounted yet--my catt alliance all seem to do better for me on mounts.... Catherine |
Great! Pictures please :)
|
Sorry I don't have pix right now--no camera, no cell phone, and my daughter (the techie in the family) doesn't get back from camp until the beginning of July...You know, one of these days I might just have to join the 21st century.
Thank you all for the information on this thread--I put mine in a south window and gave it a good drink yesterday, and misted it this morning. I plan to move it outside into dappled shade over the weekend. |

No need to apologize--I'm the one that should apologize for not having pix.....
Mine has 5 healthy pseudobulbs, the largest is about the size of my thumb. The leaves were a bit "soft" when I brought it home yesterday (though the pseudobulbs were not shriveled) but they have plumped back up with watering. Since it's raining tonight I moved it out to the porch to soak up the water, and it will be in dappled sunlight if/when the sun shines tomorrow. No new root growth on it right now, so I would think I have some time to decide whether I want to leave it potted or mount it.... |
Your biggest bulbs sounds close to the size of the one I got from Andy's mounted. It will be rewarding when these bloom, whenever that is :)
|
I have a walkeriana cross that I love (Slc. Sierra Doll, which is a cross of Slc. Pink Doll with walkeriana) for the color and the fragrance. It has bloomed for me and it's not much bigger than this bag baby.
It will be interesting to see how these walkerianas grow! |
I am hoping that these will have a great fragrance. :)
|
I saw one at home depot and thought why the hell not?
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...dcfe9f369d.jpg Even though it had no signs of new growth I decided to just go gung ho and repot it. I repotted the little guy into cypress mulch and within a week voila! http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...f2e54484d2.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...18c4d952aa.jpg Both growth points are sending out fat little green roots |
Also, as a reference this little one has 8 or 9 little leaves
|
Yay! Another bag baby project plant! I really think it is great that so many are finding these at local big box stores! From pictures I have seen of this one in the past, it will be a very pretty C. walkeriana. :)
|
Yay! Good job! Wish they had those around here .
|
More people joining, good job.

Looks like my newest growth decided to be unique and put out two leaves. I'm taking this as a sign that the next growth will be a flower spike because... why not :)
|
Nicely grown. Your plant looks great.
|
Thanks! To be fair, it looked that good when I got it, I just have kept it from getting worse.
|
Really nice plant. Strange about the double leaf. I have a Sophronitis cernua that did that.
|
Question for those that have grown C. Walkeriana before.
I know this is a relatively small plant. How big is the plant usually when it is blooming size (leaf length, pseudobulb height, or whatever measure is appropriate)? I know this is one of the Catts that bloom on separate growths from the main leafy/pseudobulb growths. Just wondering when it might be reasonable to look for those. |

I have 2 larger (newer?) bulbs that are putting out new growths. I hope these end up being blooms (fingers crossed). Does anyone know if you can tell the difference between a new bulb and a bloom growth when they are that small? In the attached picture the new growths are coming from the front bulb and the one directly behind it. |

Here is a (hopefully) better photo of one of the new growths.
|
I think its too soon to tell. I had a hybrid that bloomed like a walkeriana and it took a while before I thought something weird was going on! Hope its blooms!
|
Once it starts growing you'll be able to tell

The one that is doing the 'next best' is potted. The third one (potted, sort of, in a hollow section of tree fern) is smaller, but to be fair it is also pushing 3 leads. |

Two photos, taken today, of SVO 5365 C. walkeriana v. coerulea ('Chouju' JC/AOS x 'Wenzel's Son')
You can compare them to February of this year, my earlier post to this thread: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...tml#post801472 I need to mount this plant. I can't think of any other reasonable way to deal with it. I also can't keep up with watering in this small 2.5" / 6cm pot. The last photo shows the above plus SVO 5363 C. walkeriana (v. alba 'Pendentive' AM/AOS x 'SVO's Passion' AM/AOS). The photo is similar to the double shot in my previous post, taken April 23 of this year, referenced above. The newest growth in the April photo is now the rightmost growth in today's photo, hanging over the reflecting ball. Note the shiny new upright growth. |
I like your pond in the background.
Concerning mounting the walkeriana, I have the mounted one from Andy's and it seems to be doing well. I do try to keep an eye on the root tips to make certain they are healthy and still growing. It is my first mounted walkeriana so it worries me a little. It is easier for me to grow these in plastic Vanda baskets and red lava rock. |
The mounted one I got from Andy's is doing really well with a new growth and roots now started. I am very pleased. I do water everyday since it's mounted.
|
My Andy's walkeriana is starting another new growth! I think it likes the hot summer. I am rather excited.
I water it every day, too. |
