You can see the canes are dry in the picture, it just never put out any new starts or many roots so it pretty much stayed the same and is like that now. I have been trying different things. We shall see. I have a few other primary hybrids but I really am more into species and minis. (but I have lots of other stuff thrown in there :) )

[QUOTE=Orchid Whisperer;816962]Wow - I have had a C. Wayndora for 30+ years, now I have some walkerianas. Maybe I can re-make C. Memoria Robert Strait?
Great idea. sign me up for a seedling, too  |

I have been looking for such a photo for a long time. Back story on my plant. I purchased it in 1984 or 1985 from Cali Orchids in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico (a company by that name still exists but I suspect the ownership changed because their website says the company started in the 1990s). It was very clearly labeled as Cattleya Wayndora (Terry Wayne x Fedora) when I bought it. Comparing the OW photo to my plant, they hardly even look like third cousins twice removed! I am not sure if my plant is just at opposite ends of the Wayndora grex's genetic spectrum from the 'Lea' cultivar, or if mine is a mislabeled plant. I love my plant, and will continue to keep it labeled as Wayndora, but probably will not use it in breeding. I'll also provide the above information to anyone receiving a division in the future. |
Glad I could help. Some hybrids are very different from their seedling siblings, as members were discussing on a thread here recently about an SVO hybrid a few of us have. So its not impossible that yours could really be Wayndora. But on the other hand, it could be so easy to have plant tags moved around too. Sorry it didn't really clear up the mystery.
|
Yours could very well be just what the tag says that it is. It has quite a variety in its background.
I like buying 'noID' species, primary hybrids and crosses when I can just for the fun of it. Some turn out well, some do not (I always wait for a few bloomings until I decide). Someone in our OS had a very nice C. gaskelliana and a selfing was done. The variety of the seedlings was quite astonishing. One of my favorite tales is the tale of Nelly Isler (one of my favorite orchids). Only one of the cross turned out nice and, wow, did it ever! :) PICK OF THE WEEK / Swiss Beauty / Four types of orchids make one 'Swiss Beauty' - SFGate |
Back to the walkerianas....
On the older plant, a 'noID' 'walkeriana' bought from Al's Orchid Greenhouse (only $8!) a few years ago, I not only see the odd growths, I see that it also has sheaths! I think the sheaths seem a little suspicious. :| |
I thought walkeriana didn't bloom from there, like nobilior
|
Me, too. It might have 'Pendative' in it.
Just wondering...has the Pendative' controversy ever been settled? |

For reference, that picture on the wall behind it is 12"x12" |
Isn't that a beauty... lovely lovely growth on that. Yeah, it would be bigger because of the complex parent... but as I mentioned the walk's I've seen at growers recently (never really paid catts too much attention till this year) were actually quite large or at least larger than what i thought... does it have a an old spike on a previous growth?

I don't see an old spike, but it has a nice new growth that I don't think shows in the picture. It seems like it must be close to blooming size.

Hi, I hope I'm OK to post here, I was unaware of this Project 2016, how nice. I have a C. Walkeriana I got in June. I will not mention the greenhouse I got it from but I can't believe they sent me this poor little thing. She seems to be recovering well but is not very big. Her largest leaves and pseudobulbs combined are about 6inches, and her pseudobulbs are nice round chubby ones. I am hoping for a bloom this fall or winter but who knows how long it will take her to feel healthy. Will report if I get any exciting developments! Thanks for the tip on Project 2016.

Welcome aboard! Great to have you join the plant project! These are tough little orchids so I think you have a great chance of pulling it through. I bought a bag baby at Lowes that was in terrible shape, with a tiny extra, and both are doing quite well...new growth and roots. Good luck!!!

Last week I got my first two walkerianas. One is walkeriana tipo, the other actually is a cross between C. walkeriana 'Pendentive' (which is xdolosa) and C. nobilior semialba. The plant s look great - until I repotted them into clay pots. While walkeriana had a few living roots, and tons of old rotten roots, the nobilior cross only had rotten roots. They live on my balcony, with some shaded sun and happily there is the first root showing on nobilior. I don't water them until I'm sure to prevent any further rot.
As both plants have healthy pseudos and leaves, I hope they will thrive again soon. I'll update with photos! |
both of the walkers I got had few to no viable roots. They do seem to be very hardy and quick growing plants. Both now have several small new roots and each has a new growth.
|
Good to know your new walkerianas are growing roots!
Mine has also proven tough and fast growing. One nice new growth since I got it, and it's already starting another one. Roots are pretty short (looks like the tips browned and they stopped growing), but the p-bulbs are plump and the plant looks like a happy camper. Catherine |
My walker also had 95% rotten dead roots - all of them down in the pot. The only live roots were about 2 long thin beat up ones that were growing out side the potting mix around the top of the pot. I put it in bark in a plastic pot so I could keep an eye on root development. I'm wondering now if I should have mounted it. It seems to be bouncing back with several new roots and a new growth but I sure would love to see a bloom this fall. Just never know what to expect with your first.
|
As long as the orchid medium dries quickly and allows plenty of air to the roots, it will not matter what you use.
|
My larger plant loves semi-hydroponic culture. It sends roots way down into the medium. The smaller plant is still in its pot; I need to mount it on something. It has so many growths in so many different directions I think a mount will be the only way to handle it.
My plants most definitely make new roots only after finishing new growths. Do other people notice this? |
both of mine have little new growths about 1 inch tall and those new growth are growing roots. They are pretty tiny right now, but are growing pretty quickly.

My new growth (on my potted one that kept blasting new growths) is actually doing well. It is getting so long and going downwards I had to set it near the edge so the growth can hang off the shelf. Could a bud be in the near future??? That would be nice. The mounted one is doing well but no buds there either.
|
Good to hear it is finally doing well! Fingers cross for flowers. I would love to see them! :)
I just knocked off a new growth on two of mine but I am sure both will try again (and they have other young growths). I like this orchid because it is vigorous. |
So, went into Lowe's to pick up orchid bark today (the one in Heath with the bag babies) and came home with three more walkeriana semi alba 'Carmela.' Not that I needed more orchids, but these were easily twice the size of the one I bought early in the summer for the same price....All of them need to be repotted, and are showing a "climbing" growth habit with the rhizome heading upwards (sort of like some Oncs).
So, having 4 of the same cv gives me a wonderful opportunity to try different growing conditions. One is going into a terrarium where it can grow up the cork and branches on the back wall. I'd like to mount one of the others and grow it with the other mounted orchids in the living room. The original is potted in bark, and I think I'll keep it there. I'm toying with semi-hydro for the fourth one--any ideas or tips to get me started? Thanks in advance! Catherine |
Wow, that is great! I saw we had new bag babies at our Lowes but I was with spouse and he was in a hurry. I might need to sneak back and take a closer look. :)
I haven't tried anything unique with mine...except the one that came mounted. It will be interesting to see how yours all fare! |
Thank you Leafmite! I don't really need more orchids, but couldn't pass up the walkerianas (and others)....BTW, one of the nice things about being single is not having to worry about spousal issues ("you got how many more orchids??!!") with my obsessions, er, hobbies (lol)....
One thing that's missing from a lot of orchid information is the "how I kept it/how I grow it" nuts and bolts type of stuff. And we don't usually get a comparison of growing methods on the different orchids of the same species/cvs at the same time. This way I can see how 4 plants of the same genetic background respond to different growing conditions during a given time frame.....The results won't be definitive (the sample sizes for each growing method would have to be much larger), but they can at least give us some insights into what various conditions do to these plants.... Catherine |
I think it is an interesting experiment. :)
|
I just put the mounted walkeriana from Andy's into a plastic Vanda basket of red lava rock. The roots were not as nice as the other walkerianas that were already potted that way.

They smelled great!

How beautiful! Good to know that they are indeed fragrant. Thanks for giving us all a little hope! :)

I posted a photo of this mount back in the summer when I first mounted it. Here it is in my indoor growing space:
http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...pstt7xrbjc.jpg Sorry, photo looks better on my phone than on my computer. My other two C.w. 'Carmela' plants are 1) potted and 2) planted on a section of tree fern, doing fine but this mounted plant seems to be doing better. |
My one I had mounted on the rock was not doing well so I took it off the mount and put it in a pot with bark. The biggest root turned black so I took it off and the new roots were all stubby and not growing right. I don't know if it was absorbing something it didn't like from the rock or if it just wasn't staying moist enough. I had SM under it that I kept pretty moist, but the roots still just didn't seem to do well. So, I'll see how it does in a pot. If it picks back up maybe I'll try mounting it on cork bark or wood.
|
My mounted one is doing great put my potted one I knocked over this AM and found the roots are all dried up. :(
|
I believe it needs a lot more water than we think.
|
On my wood mount, the roots get sprayed daily. There is no sphagnum moss on the mount, so the roots just absorb the daily spray. That seems to be enough water so far.
