Project 2 (Summer 2006) - Sign Up & Suggestions

I am just loving the idea that you guys are discussing this and coming up with suggestions. We know that the size of the plant and the temperature range are two of the important criteria for whatever we choose. From that starting point, there are so many to choose from, it would be great to get something that isn't the "norm". We've got a number of interesting, uncommon names on our list...we're gonna end up with something awesome, I just know it
We will find something that we all like, that works in our conditions and that won't cost a fortune and then...we treat it as if we were the only one that has this plant, growing it in our own conditions...whatever they may be.

For example, in our current project, the Phal lobbii...I have moved that baby three times since I got it. Looking for the perfect spot...which is what I would do whether or not it was the project plant

This is going to be very cool and it's great that we've had such a positive response!

We now have 22 "YES" votes and 19 names.
One of the YES votes was Marty but things
have become a little hectic for him so he'll
be holding off until the next project .

That leaves us with two votes unaccounted for.

One of them was a guest and since we have
no way of knowing if that particular person
ever joined OB, I think we can take that
as an invalid vote.

The last one (and you know who you are )
has not replied to the PM I sent out to confirm
who will be joining us.

I have done all I can to get this list as concise
as possible, and as of now the true count is:

19 YES votes...18 names...and 12 days to the end of the poll!!!

Some info from my 1200 Species by Botanica book regarding the Bulbo dearei:

This attractive species is distributed from west Malaysia through the island of Borneo to the Phillipines. It grows at elevations up to 3300 ft (1000 m). It's pseudobulbs grow close together and are about 2 in (5 cm) tall. The single leaf is rigid and leathery, and is up to 6 in (15cm) long. The single flowers are borne on an inflorescense that is generally shorter than the leaves. The flowers are about 4 3/4 in (12 cm) across, are heavily textured and long-lasting. Flowering occurs during spring and early summer. This species responds well to cultivation in a shallow pot or hanging basket.

I think the lower temps quoted earlier were a mistake. I've looked at info on a few different sites and they all say it is intermediate-warm-hot.

Susanne, it's going to be a great project and can't wait to see what we all come up with. Out of the voter's how many do we have outside of the US? It would be very interesting to see where we are all located. Counting the days, it's so citing... lol.

OK I'm tentatively onboard...

of the suggestions made already, I like the phal bellina a lot, but it's only 1-2 flowers.

I like Sedenfadenia (Aerides) mitrata the best. a mount is a bit intimidating, but it looks doable.

I'll make some suggestions later...back to work!
