They say it likes it in temps of 50-60 F????? Could that be right? I hope not.

I really like both choices, but the second one might require temps too low even for me.

In Canada It's more easy to find Paph and Phal. I don't like paph so I don't want to pay 30-40$ to have one

. So, I will put my vote on phal bellina. I want cycnoches but I don't find it in Canada...

Interpreting what Colin means, I think what he is saying is that he'd prefer us not go to for Phals, not because they aren't good plants, but since many people have them in their collections, he'd like for us to try for something a little different...break us out of our comfort zone...something that will challenge us as growers...

and I right Colin?

Maybe we need to try things that are not normally grown in our areas. For an example, bulbos are not a big grower in my part of the country. Most people get turned off because of the smell that they can give but we should look at ones that don't smell. Another thing I think we need to look at is the size of the plant. By what I can tell, most people in the north don't want a large plant in the future because where they are growing them. Another point that I would like to point out is that growers all over the country grow orchids differently. An example, up north people that grow vandas use moss or a mix to grow them in while in Florida, I just use a basket or even a wire. The media is even different....some people use s/h, bark, or even a mix of medias. Each part of the country has different requirements for the media. An example of that is I have a friend that lives in NC and he uses sheddred treefern as his media as down here in Florida, 5 months later that same mix would be mudd in the pot due to the humid conditions.

I think we should look at plants that we all can grow and experiment with. How can you learn something if you don't try something different?

Im all for the Bulbo's and the genera I have never even heard of till this thread came about. But I have such a small collection that just about anything would make me happy. However, once again, I say, Bulbo's

During our decision making session(s), we'll weed out whatever plants any of us already have...it just adds to the fun. This is why I've suggested we are all armed with our first, second and third choices. If we can't come up with something off of those lists, we'll come back with more choices

It may take a little doing but we'll get it done
