Podangis dactyloceras (Project 16 [side] - Spring 2015)
I ended up with two Podangis. I got my first one from Al's Orchids and the one that is mounted is from Hausermann's. As folks have posted earlier, Hausermann's has several of these plants, most of them are in pots growing like my potted one from Al's. I found this one hanging all the way in the back wall of the first green house. I chose the best one!
This is not an endorsement to buy your plant from Hausermann's--they are expensive plus add shipping and you have one expensive Hausermann plant! url=https://flic.kr/p/tP6vu9]https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8764/1...50d6b326_o.jpg[/url]Podangisdactyloceras by Matt Woelfsen, on Flickr |

My Podangis is doing okay, the two on that are still on the mount i got them on don't seem to be doing much no new roots and lost 2 leaves but the one that i mounted on the piece of grape wood is producing roots. well.. one root and a little stump ;)
Yesterday i went to the nursery i got them from and they had larger species there that were mounted on way better wood and in spike but i thought i can also wait and hope that mine will get bigger.. patience is not my strong suit but i managed to drive away without it! |
I'm afraid I am keeping mine too wet. How wet do these things like to be? It came to me potted in moss, so when I repotted it, I put it back in moss, but the moss I'm using seems to like to retain more moisture than the old rotted stuff did. Any thoughts?

The reason I decided not to mount mine is that my wet wall gets watered almost every day during the summer. That would be too wet for it for sure. |
So they're more like a tolumnia in their watering needs? I water mine tolumnias in the morning and they are dry by night time. I have them potted in clay pots with just a few really big pieces of bark.

It seems pretty weird to me since they do not have a pseudobulb water storage. My best guess is that the succulent-like leaves provide extra water storage and given that they sometimes hang over rivers and waterfalls, they are getting some water spray or a fog-like mist in the morning. |
Mine's not doing much either. I had one leaf at the bottom yellow and fall off. Other than that, no change. No new leaves, no new roots, nothing. Of course, it's not getting worse, either, so that's something ;-)
I have mine in a 3" clay pot with small lava rock. It's outside, where it's been around 80 during the day, and 55 at night. Humidity between 70-100%. I've been watering every other day or so. Maybe a bit too often... |
