Next year....
Sorry to hear the news. My dogs are not usually the guilty party when blooms get knocked off...it is always me. :| One of the dogs, though, waps everything with her tail so I do need to be careful where I put orchids. In the past, she has shredded a few orchids so I do keep an eye on her when she takes an interest in them.

I'm loving the romanticism of this thread right now. It's turning downright dramatic Will this elusive plant bloom for anyone? Stay tuned!

Well indeed this seems to be the case. I know mine won't The Turtle (my basset) pulled my new orchids I just got that I had opened and put back inside the box off the table and I did get mad at her. She does this to punish me when I leave her alone. Or should I say leave her home, as she has the 2 other dogs so she is not alone.

She will tare something up. I wish I could blame it on her being a puppy but she's at least 12. I don't think this will end soon

Dogs really need to know what is going on, and what you are doing. When I'm doing something and they're really interested, I show them whatever it is and let them sniff. If it's not food they lose interest right away.

Well lucky you, the Turtle is just a bad dog. She has no interest in it when I open them up, only after I leave. She has also pulled books off the table and torn a corner off of it. It is strictly to punish me.

Default One Single bloom 01-10-2016

* monticola, in Latin=meaning "dwelling in mountainous regions", referring to the habitat of this species.
This orchid specie is endemic to the mountains of Nueva Vizcaya, in the northern Luzon island of the Philippines at elevations of between 1,800 and 2,200 meters. It grows as an epiphyte on the fringes of the rainforest. It flowers in January and February in the Philippines, so I must be giving it the correct culture. I maintained the leaves healthy and clean and I also noticed new roots growing.
This orchid plant is still scarce in cultivation; I was lucky to be able to acquire one seedling plant from a reputable grower who has been cultivating numerous clones of this taxon for the last six years. It likes to be grown in pots of live sphagnum moss but I acquired it in small sized Phal mix so I did not bother to replant it. I also noticed that A. monticola likes cooler temperatures and good air circulation. The heat of summer poses more threat to this species than the cool of winter. I have seen it wilt in the Manhattan summer humid air out on my fire escape= since I thought it came from the Philippines an equatorial humid environment that it would love the New York summer heat. I had to put it immediately indoors to the cooler AC environment.
This has no rest period and it only has two seasons= rainy season and the dry summer season of the Philippine islands but since it is in a mountainous region it must have morning cool temperatures and early morning dew so I give it a water regimen of every other day and fertilizer weekly weakly.
This has newly opened its petals so it has not yet achieved its fullest potential.

Great job!

My spike remains in suspended animation. Hasn't grown a millimeter that I can tell but is still green and healthy looking.... Maybe if I show it the pic of yours it'll motivate it to do something lol
