Default Spring 2015 project: PLANT SUGGESTIONS

It’s that time you’ve all been waiting for; time to start the spring 2015 plant project !!

For those that haven’t participated in such a project before, here’s the concept: We research orchid species that meet set criteria, and once we have a list of at least 5-6 candidates, all participants vote for their favorite. The winning plant is our project plant that everyone will purchase. Then we can compare notes about culture, give tips to each other (and see who gets it to bloom first!)

These projects are meant to encourage people to try orchids that may not want to grow otherwise, while having the support of many other people growing the same plant. Maybe you think it’s too difficult to grow, or you just don’t like the plant. Even if you start out not liking it, a lot of people in past projects discovered that they did love the plant, and it’s so rewarding to be able to bloom a plant you never thought you’d own!

The ‘rules’ will pretty much follow what has been done in past years, which are designed to include a maximum number of people:

-Temperature: intermediate
-Age/Size: blooming size or near blooming size (should be BS in less than a year), and we usually stick to miniature-small to intermediate sized plants. No monsters!
-Price: Max $20 / $30 CAN / 20€. Like last time the Canada limit is higher, because plants are more
expensive there. Maybe the limit will be increased a bit, I get the feeling that prices have gone up a bit, at least in Europe.
-Availability: available in sufficient numbers/multiple growers for the main regions involved (usually Canada, US and Europe- but this will be decided based on the sign up list)
-Preferably species (easier to find worldwide. Very common hybrids can be considered,if they can be found everywhere)

Once the project is started we may need to tweak the concept a bit if there are really way to many people signed up, and have 2 plants: a cool-intermediate, and a intermediate-warm.

There was a poll posted earlier this year to see what the preferred alliances were. It may be difficult to stick to those, but it gives a good starting point to search for candidates. 2015 Project, Pick an Alliance

Please sign up for the project here:
http://www.orchidboard.com/community...up-thread.html

This thread is to make suggestions and discuss potential plants:

When making suggestions:
1)Please check that it meets the temperature and size criteria
2)In the case of species post the IOSPE link to the plant if possible.
3)Try to research growers that have it, within price range. For lists of reputable growers check previous project threads.

Suggestions of other good growers is welcome!

Let's celebrate spring and have some fun!!

I nominate Habenaria medusa ( well actually any Habenaria spp. ). Habenarias are fascinating orchids because they require a dormant period.

Details
IOSPE PHOTOS
Temps
Break dormancy in Spring and grow thru Summer/Fall. Temps shouldn't be an issue -at least in the Northern Hemisphere.
Cultivation
I grew mine with ease in a shaded south-facing/west window. No special fertilisation requirements.
Price
More towards $30

I'm going to nominate Dendrobium Cucumerinum, also sold as Dendrobium Cucumeranium and Dockrillia Cucumerinia also known as The Cucumber Orchid or the Gherkin Orchid. I've seen this one available for sale all over the place.

IOSPE PHOTOS
Temp: Depends on who you ask, looks like it can thrive in a lot of temperature conditions, IOSPE says from Cool to Hot. Seattle Orchid says Intermediate to Warm.
Looks like most of the plants I have seen available are blooming size.
Price is between 20 and 30$ depending on where you buy it.

Grammatophyllum martae or dendrobium amethystoglossum. Not many people have these in their collections but they can be bought anywhere! I'd like to see more people grow these, plus then I have an excuse to buy them lol

Those are darling but not sure about the "short lived foul smelling" flowers lol.

Good point, some people may not like stinkers! The thing is, this one you have to get pretty close to smell it and the flowers are really cute. I'd like to try it and may get one, even if it's not chosen as the project plant.

I'm open to anything though. I have a bulbo that I bought as a seedling on a whim because it was like 7$. I later found out that the flowers smell like rotten meat, stinky cheese or cat pee, depending on who you talk to. I'm okay with this. The flower is gorgeous so I can let go of the fact that it reeks. LOL!

Here are two suggestions that seem to fit the small and easy to find list:

Nominating Aerangis fastuosa and Schoenorchis fragrans. Both of them stay very small, are usually available, and grow in intermediate temperatures.

Default Spring 2015 project: PLANT SUGGESTIONS

I would be perfectly happy with any of the suggestions so far (except Schoenorchis fragrans, which I already own, and which is exceedingly slow growing) and in fact have considered a few of them before. However, I'd like to add my 2 cents:
Aerangis luteo-alba
IOSPE PHOTOS
Temps: looks like I/W, tolerating a wide range from around 50F to mid-80s
Cultivation: the only downside is possibly that it needs high and consistent humidity.
Price: $15 here, possibly not quite blooming size, but available elsewhere for mid-20s.

Ooh!! I have wanted to try that one for a while!

I also have Schoenorchis Fragrans and agree that it is very slow growing. I've had mine for about a year now and it has grown a leaf, just the one and it had started growing it before I bought it. I had to figure out how much light it wanted so I'm sure that set it back a bit.
